MD requires 4 years of Math in HS. Every senior is required to take Math regardless of the level they are on.

Not true.

Yes it is!

NEW STATE REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS GRADUATING IN 2018 AND LATER: Students graduating in 2018 and later must be enrolled in a mathematics-based course each year of high school. This may result in students earning more than 4 credits in math for graduation. See the Mathematics Department offerings section for more detail.

There are rare times in my life I have been grateful for my applied mathematics college degree. I have personally tutored my kids (MS and HS) since the start of this school year. Honestly, though, the teachers were between a rock and a hard place. They were told to limit their assignments and assessments, not stress the kids out, but somehow cater to parents who wanted a "normal" year of education. My HS kid's math teacher has been abysmal (unresponsive to emails, long delays in returning assessments, errors in worksheet answer keys), but at least they have gotten through the material. It has meant a test or quiz every week and lots of video lessons, but they have mostly gotten through the material.

I'm sympathetic to everyone. What a miserable situation.

That is true, but, in light of the pandemic, the requirements for the classes of 2020 and 2021 were reduced, so that students can graduate with 3 math credits and 1/2 PE credit.

Kids had to sign up for all 4 years. This only covered kids who failed either math or PE senior year.

Then, they are already “ahead”. Hard to declare there’s learning loss in courses that the majority of students will never take in HS or college.

NO. there is "learning loss" if the curriculum that was planned to be covered by end of school year, and has been in previous years, was not able to be fully covered, especially if 40 percent was not covered. These kids who are taking the class should get the full curriculum just as a less able learner should, if they are in Geometry in Junior year for example.
How can one accurately say they took the class if they only covered a bit more than half of the content?!

Newsflash: this isn’t a normal school year.

Parents and all concerned citizens need to organize and resist this insanity.

How do you propose resisting, without a time machine? What's done is done.

Unfortunately, there is not much parents can do. MCPS is a dysfunctional school system and there is too much politics at play. There is zero chance that MCPS is interested in doing anything about this.

It will be up to parents to fill in the gaps. Buy stock in Kumon! You will see private businesses that provide the service taking off in this area.

MCPS has different priorities. Detailed and in-depth math education does not appear to be one of those priorities.

Learning loss is real and has costs. A child that would have gotten a full year of calculus is worse off than she otherwise would have been. Studies show this will impact their earnings long term. Education isn't there to make us feel good - it has real value.
