Can you quote a post where someone says this? I don’t see that anywhere.

It’s more parents wondering what their kids are missing, and discussing if it will be an issue later on.

You are the one posting hysterical comments, IMO.

Poster already said it was social media. Do your own homework. How is it “hysterical” when all they are doing is quoting real life MCPS parents? We’ve all seen these exact posts all over social media. You’re an idiot, IMO.

"Do your own homework [or research]" is typically code for "I have nothing".

Not the pp, but no it absolutely is not. It means people shouldn’t have to wade through peoples posts just to prove a point to an anonymous moron on the job internet. If you want proof, do it yourself. I just took a glance at the togetheragainmcps Twitter and their most recent post is about “MD will NEVER catch up. kids may never catch up. We are frightened.” Never catch up? Really? Because they had to attend school online for a year? Sounds exactly like fear mongering to me. Also, the next time someone tells you to do your homework, realize you’re just a lazy person who can’t be bothered to educate yourself.

Actually it's "And the map is quite revealing too. MD so behind (driven by MCPS) and will never catch up. Our kids may never catch up. We should be outraged and frightened."

I don't like the group, but you should quote their tweets correctly.

Not everyone is going to college for gender studies. Kids doing STEM actually need math. And I hate to have to tell you this, but the best of the best in MoCo aren't competing with the dregs of MoCo. They are competing with the best of the best around the globe. And most of those kids had a full school year.

Specifically, they need to have taken the classes and gotten good grades.

Also, the "dregs of MoCo" stock your grocery shelves, cook and serve your food at restaurants, fix your plumbing, and care for your children and elderly relatives - which likely provides a lot more value to society than whatever you do. Plus, given your attitude, they probably spit in your coffee.

Thank you for helping make my poijnt.
The people doing all of those things you listed need math even less than someone studying victimology in college.

Was your point is that you have contempt for a lot of your fellow human beings?

No, that equity is holding back some kids who really need math for advanced careers because the kids who are going to be janitors can't do math which is ridiculous and detrimental to society.

Another person who thinks that "Brave New World" is a good plan for society, not a dystopian novel.^^^

The same can be said for progressives and "Harrison Bergeron."

I'm late to the party but Harrison Bergeron is just a right-wing slippery slope fallacy. It's an emotional appeal to people who are still afraid that communism is going to get them. It's only relevant for people who actually think Kurt Vonnegut was an important American author. It's something Ayn Rand would have considered profound.

Its relevant because it exemplifies why equity requires discrimination. There's no way to lift the dregs of society as high as the top-tier can soar. So clipping their wings is necessary for equity...just like MCPS is doing.

Damn you, Poe's Law!

Anyone’s riding 6th grader taking Algebra? With the math learning loss I heard they are discouraging it.

Unfortunately, with a post like that, at 11:49 pm, it's about 99% certain that the poster was sincere.

Not the pp, but it's called paraphrasing...nothing they said changed the meaning or the context. Don't be pedantic.

You all really need to learn to embed tweets in your posts so people don't spend pages of threads arguing about who said what. Are you people really this bored?

It's not called paraphrasing when you put it in quotation marks. Also, "We are frightened" and "we should be outraged and frightened" mean different things.

Yep - my middle schooler did the math boost last summer and we just signed him up again for in-person. MAP-M score in the fall actually showed some improvement (already a great score but improvement is nice).

We didn’t do anything extra in math... leaned into sports (soccer and tennis) to alleviate stress and have some fun instead.

They don’t have to be so far behind.

No point at our ES kids posted record scores on the MAP-M. I think the district average was 96% so looks like virtual outperformed in person by a wide margin at least in MCPS.

It's been a great test of parents' math skills!

I suspect that may be true in a few isolated cases but overall DL has been fine for us, but I never really expected the school system to teach my kids everything anyway.
