MCPS message on parent-organized graduation/prom parties

I loved my prom, graduation, the parties, and beach week. A ton of fun.

I’d let my kid go to an event but fifth & eighth grade promotion/graduation parties & ceremonies are dumb. Wish they did away with them when they got rid of perfect attendance awards.

This is where MCPS needs to take a step back from the lecturing. They have chosen to not allow in person events or visitors on campus. I disagree with that decision, but they have that authority over their buildings.

They can also STFU about what people do in their free time on their private property.

I listened to part of the board meeting where this came up and it was interesting. Problem with these parent sponsored things is that many kids get left out. So the most popular rich kids get something nice and the disadvantaged and kids with disabilities are left out. But well if there is anything this pandemic taught us, it is that many people don't care about anyone but themselves. Enjoy your party!

NP. Did you also listen to the part where the man who presented the slides on graduation bucked back at the board member who mentioned parents planning their own thing and cited TRANSPORTATION as an excuse for those without means? It was laughable bc he made the connection between access to transportation and equity. As if the yellow buses even picked up for those events. At some point the equity argument cannot be the answer to everything bc it will just push people to roll their eyes when equity discussions are really important.

I am appalled at how low many parents are in this area. Such high housing costs, such high taxes, such high piggyback taxes.

And we are STILL okay with

Wednesday off for “cleaning” instead of school hours

Alternating weeks instead of increasing to go weekly

2 classes a week instead of a daily schedule

No drinkable water in the schools

Soggy wet cold sandwiches for lunch almost daily

The board talking and talking while being 0% productive

Spending time asking families to not do anything for their seniors and just accept no prom when 90% of the country is having prom.

Not holding teachers accountable for not showing up to zoom classes or appointments

Not holding kids accountable when they don’t show up for classes, turn in work 2 days before marking period ends.

Other districts, counties, and states have done more. We are dead last in the country. It is sad

Me too! The ones that don’t care, didn’t care then either

This is called real life.

Should I also not bring my kids to Europe because there poor kids won't have a chance to go?

Or should I not get my kids a car, because poor kids have to take the bus?

The obsession with equity stops the minute you step outside the school.

Yes, some kids may get left out. But that's life.

This is a very good point. Equity in resources is important.

But whenever EVERYTHING is is an issue of equity, then nothing is an issue of equity.

MCPS is out of control

You are everything that is wrong with this county. 35% FARMS kids, but not my problem. I should not deny my kids Europe.

Just wow

I have an 8th grader and a 12th grader. My 8th grader doesn't need a promotion ceremony but my 12th grader should have a graduation. I think they had to say they didn't support the alternative prom from a legal/liability standpoint. Our school's alternative prom has sent messages from the school. I doubt they are going to do anything but say don't do it.

Listen to yourself. You're literally showing how making everything about equity is a bad thing.

You said since some kids can't go to to an outdoor graduation party, planned, funded and organized entirely OUTSIDE the school system, then no kids should be able to do that.

It's ridiculous.

I also bet that you're full of crap too and provide lots of things to your kids that lower-income families dont have.

The person said now. Do you think about these events daily? If so, you might want to reevaluate your life. The kids have many more chances to go to parties and they can still go to beach week this week.

My Oldest daughter had her prom in Long Island before I moved here. It is always week AFTER Graduation not school
Sponsored and since kids graduated has nothing to do with HS.

It is a full blown over the top event at an oceanfront catering hall. Kids have limos and party busses. Prom dresses, Tuxes and it lasts all night. They even serve breakfast on the beach.

It is full throttle last year and this year. They just delayed last years prom a few months and had it outdoors oceanfront and her old HS had an outdoor graduation last year.

In MoCo my youngest is locked up while her old schoolmates have been going to school all year!!

Why'd you lock her up?

Does MCPS really think that families will change their plan based on that letter? I mean very cautious families would not suddenly invite 50 people to a graduation party if MCPS said it was fine. Families that are planning to do something will not change based on this.

Invited families might, though. Venues might also.
