In DC: "White Parents Horrified by George Floyd Video Still Go to Great Lengths..."

If you tell people that their progressive politics are at odds with making good choices about their kids' education, they're not going to make the choice you're trying to get them to make.

The author of the funny article totes himself as a "PHD haver." Never seen that before on a tagline! He must be smart.

If the parents at low performing schools just cared more, those schools would improve. How about encouraging that? Instead, this just sounds like another rehash of "white man's burden". Seriously, woke people, this has been done, and that’s where this road will lead you.

Cancelling AP classes, cancelling entrance exams for rigorous schools, the shame based approach to race (“be less white!”), the increase in false accusations of racism at every turn (recent Smith college incident), claiming that “show your math work” is racist...I guess you would immediately tar me with claims of white fragility. That’s fine.

Why do you "hate to admit" that you dislike this insanity? Are you so insecure that you have to qualify an opinion like this?

Is the complaint that white kids are going to Wilson, a perceived better school, at the expense of Black students?

I think everyone, white and Black, want the best education possible for their kids.

I didn't realize that in order to be morally repulsed by racist state murder meant that you should not care about your child's education.

+1. I find it so funny that they are so defensive about their hypocrisy. Yes, dear, you purchased a 1.2 million dollar, 1,000 sq ft home in upper NW “for the schools”. We all know what you mean. But, hey, you went to a BLM protest and have a little sign in your yard.

This is just bizarre. Most of the schools in DC are very bad. Some are HILARIOUSLY bad. Most of the schools in UNW are quite good. So what is hypocritical about wanting your kids to go to a good school?

People think that good means white. And if you mention test scores you’re racist and if you mention criminal behavior you’re really racist

Where do you live and how old are are your children? Do you know the actual demographics of the places you are discussing? Have you personally visited any school in DC?

Would a racist choose Wilson?

“I support racial equity, but not when it makes me feel bad or may negatively impact me!”

“I support racial equity, but I also have a primary responsibility to educate my children.”

A racist would not choose DCPS.

If you aren’t personally underwriting a URM student’s tuition at Sidwell while sending your child to Eastern, you are part of the problem

These issues need not be in conflict.

Wilson is only 39%. That’s literally what this brouhaha is all about. The whitest school....is barely white.

That's a bit harsh. I personally think that a lot of parents actually don't really know what to do. I think a lot of parents think that education is the schools "job", while their "job" is to feed and cloth their kids. It is the idea of education as a service provided by the state and not a lifelong process that has its own value. For kids that do well in school, education does not end when they leave school, parents are involved in homework and in providing added enrichment. My biggest problem is that somehow, parents that care about their kids education are also supposed to be guilted as "dream hoarders" for providing enrichment. Justice will not be served by making all kids ignorant, but more work really needs to be done to show parents in low performing schools how to model behaviors for success, like limiting screen time, promoting reading outside of what is assigned at school, etc.

I think everyone understands that kids that excel in sports or dance put in the work on their own time outside of practice, however somehow this same notion does not carry over to school and education for some reason.

DCPS as a whole is only 10% white. It is unclear what the goal is with these people screaming about "segregation".
