William and Mary iS OUT

Can anyone talk about expected waitlist movement? We are shocked that DS wasn't an outright admit, and he is kicking himself for not applying ED. Is there anything we can do to better his chances of getting off the waitlist?

I don't think anyone should be "shocked" by a waitlist to a school like W&M. I'm guessing you have a typical DCUM kid with 35-36 ACT, 4.5 GPA, stellar ECs, blah blah blah, and yet it's still not a gimme.

The best way to get off the waitlist is to tell them immediately how interested you are. DS should follow up with a nice email to the admissions official he's assigned to saying that W&M is his first choice, and he will attend if offered a spot.

W&M typically makes good use of its waitlist because it is a perennially second-choice school. (I say this as a proud and happy alum.) But by all accounts they accepted a lot of students from ED this year, so maybe there will be less waitlist movement than usual? There's really no way to know.

DS, in-state legacy. 4.1wGPA, 1440 SAT, varsity sport, some volunteering, job as busboy. DS had some medical issues in middle school and early high school, and I suspect his guidance counselor and teacher recs underlined his hard work and perseverance.

My suspicion is these colleges that got significantly more applications (William and Mary got 27% more) largely due to test optional, don't really know what their yield will be. So they are probably thinking they need to be a bit conservative in admissions (so as not to overenroll), and then they will have to fill to target through wait list.

Did they take a higher percentage ED this year? If they did, it will probably counteract this. In periods of uncertainty, colleges are incented to accept an even higher percentage early.

Wow! Those stats are amazing!

Q: does W&M put any weight on legacy status?

Boy, I hope you're right. Per Naviance, W&M should have been a safety for my son.
