Very little. Take a look at Key and see who is in front of you - is it kids with siblings there? If yes, there is little chance that all people with sibs already at Key are going to move to another option.

But for places that you have a high number -lets pretend Eaton. If you look at all the applicants at Janney, (who got in) many of them put Eaton as a choice as well. So there are probably 40 people on the waitlist at Eaton who got accepted to Janey - and can be quickly removed. So it might move significantly over the summer.

You never know.

PS. And I don't want to say which school, because it seems unfair to parents who did get accepted there & seem excited by. I hate the school-slamming that can go on here.

Sorry to have been a tease about this--I should never have made that comment.

Don't give up because the waiting list should move up but do e-mail or call the Principal to register your interest now.

We're in boundary (no sibling---all those with sibs made it in) with a number between 5-10 on the wait list.
Based on any knowledge you have on previous years' movement, do we have a realistic hope? Website says that class size is 57 kids.

Here's what we got (kindergarten lottery)

Murch 22
Oyster (english) 167
Hearst 8
Janney 150
Eaton 127
Lafayette 71

Neither my wife nor I are particularly optomistic, even with Hearst's low numbers, There are several ahead of us with sibling or proximity preferences. Its hard to imagine them ever reaching #8.

We got a spot in PK at Mann -- in-boundary with sibling preference. What surprised us is that all 19 spots went to in-boundary families with sibling preference, and one such family was placed on the wait list...

You can always buy yourself some time at:

Appletree
Bridges

Beats paying for another year of daycare!

Why would that surprise you? PK at Mann? How else would you get in except for in-boundary with sibling preference?

Does anyone know how far down the waitlist they got for PreK at Janey last year?

Someone posted on a different post that #7 for PreK did NOT get off the waitlist last year.

PreK lottery results:

1 Oyster NO YES 21 In-Boundary
2 Hearst ES NO YES 98 No Preference
3 Hyde ES NO YES 206 No Preference
4 Stoddert NO YES 49 No Preference
5 Janney ES NO YES 219 No Preference
6 Eaton ES NO YES 20 No Preference

I am told we are lucky because we will get into Oyster next year. Maybe there is some hope for Eaton this year?

This lottery sort of kills me. I went to Hyde for a couple of years, and I was one of only 2 kids in my grades that lived in the neighborhood. It now looks like several in boundary kids were unable to get into Pre-K.

Do you mean in-boundary for K 2011? We were single digit Spanish prek and did not get in this past year. Good luck!

My guess is that you are referring to Janney. If I am correct then I think that you may have a chance. My rationale is based on the class size. Last year the official Janney class size was listed as 40, but there are actually 42 (maybe 43) kids enrolled in PK. We were 4 on the waitlist and we got in (the school told me we were the last ones that made it off the list). My guess is that one person declined and the school/DCPS choose to increase the class size. The 57 class size this year is based on 19 kids per class, seems odd that they would reduce the class size for the next school year. My guess is that the classes will be bumped up to 21 which would create 6 spots off the bat, plus there may be a parent or two who decline the spot that they got.

Good Luck
