PP here, I would need to speak very loudly to communicate with a large group of young swimmers during a practice. I would need to yell. |
Yes, and it has since been updated. |
No one said anything about coaches needing to project their voice. That’s expected when you are coaching athletes with their heads buried under water in a room with terrible acoustics. We’re talking about belittling 6.7 and 8 year olds and fostering a culture of bullying. |
In the 3 years or so with WL as coach, our family hasn’t seen those negative behaviors. |
2 of my 3 swimmers were coached by Wendy when in ISS. We did not experience belittling behavior, screaming at children, or anything else negative and we are not of the same ethnic background.
She has high expectations and sets standards. The oldest coached by Wendy is now a successful senior level swimmer who wants to swim in college. My swimmer is still friendly with her and looks back fondly on the time in minis. My advice is don’t rely on hearsay or one opinion. |
Last year, try outs were held for two weeks in July. I think each pool had two try out dates and results were released a day or two after the last one. You had to sign up to try out at the pool that you wanted your kid to attend practice. |
You are lucky. Its not what our kids reported with some coaches. |
Looks like dates are posted but no more info yet. Any insider info? Interested in minis and wondering if waiting for the July date at KSAC would give kid a little more time to practice. |
1. Remember that KSAC is not going to be practicing at KSAC now that the facility is going to be renovated. 2. Don't take the minimum standards outlined in the tryout flyers as goals: in my experience DCs needed to be better than those standards to get in (and we're not at Rockville, either, where the written standards are even higher). 3. You can request feedback if DC does not make it, so that you have a better sense of what to work on next time. 4. Even quite decent kid swimmers might not get a spot. Definitely try again if DC does not make it! |
Depends if your kid is new to swim and would really improve their technique noticeably in the intervening weeks, become legal in an additional stroke, etc. If they’re very experienced and you’re only expecting incremental improvements in their form, I’d recommend the earlier tryout date. |
I'd also recommend that you emphasize to DC that they want to swim their best and try their best, but they also want to be _great_ at following directions. If the coach's mouth is moving and you are at the end of the lane and not actively swimming, your eyes should be on the coach and you should be holding still, not bouncing, bobbing, turning somersaults, or talking. |
First question you need to ask yourself (because it is the first question that comes up for minis), "Is my child legal in all 4 strokes?" Examine that answer truthfully. Does your kid kick breast legally? Do they recover over the water in fly? Those are two of the biggies, you can think of others. |
PP didn’t state the age of their kid. This matters greatly and your comment may or may not be relevant based on the answer. 6 year olds do not need to be legal in 4 strokes to make (or thrive) in minis. |
Thanks. Kid is 7 and legal in all 4. |
7 as of the December 2024 cutoff date? Assuming technique is also solid I think your kid stands a good chance. Wishing you the best! |
