Here’s the problem: You assume we all hate everyone from the Midwest. We don’t. I don’t, at least. So for me to see you all saying I don’t live in “real America” is pretty awful, when I harbor zero derision towards you. |
I agree with all of this. Generally speaking for most of the country, the best/elite school is going to be your flagship state university. There is maybe a few states where this is not true, but for the most part this is the case. |
| Most of the people I know who you'd consider to be "from real America" tell me that all colleges are about the same and you can get the same education from anywhere. I am "from real America" and went to a "fancy" school and this is what they have told me, back when I still had T-shirts from the school that I would wear around sometimes. You know how many T-shirts you end up with after freshman year. |
| I grew up in a small town in the mountain west. On the rare occasion that one of our high school grade went to a big football school, it was seen as elite...because it was on TV. |
**grads Not grade |
The difference is that while we might think you’re nothing but a bunch of rubes, we don’t deny that you’re American rubes. |
Yup. I have absolutely nothing against people who aren’t from the coasts, but if I say that I prefer to live in DC or NYC, it’s not because I don’t think the middle of the country is America. |
For the record, I'm a New Yorker, but I don't agree with some of the baseless elitism that I see on DCUM and especially in the colleges forum. No one is saying you're not American or threatening to revoke your citizenship, calm down. What people CAN very reasonably say is that the world and experience that a certain subset of elitist snobs live in (certainly the ones who would stereotype any person not from the Northeast or West Coast as being "rubes") do not at all reflect the world and experience of the majority of Americans. So there ya go. If you're living in your tiny little bubble looking down at the rest of the country, I think the rest of the country has a little leeway to talk back a little. Don't worry, princess, it's nothing more serious than that. |
+1,000 Well said. This has turned into quite an amusing thread. |
Ah, there it is! As usual, you don’t disappoint. DP |
THIS. |
I’m a New Yorker too. You can call someone elitist without saying they’re not a real American. One is descriptive; the other is truly awful. Also, once again: I have nothing against people who aren’t from the coasts. The fact that you keep describing me as though I do suggests to me that you yourself harbor those viewpoints. |
Ah, yes, because what on earth could possibly be worse than not being an American? I shudder to think of how “awful” it must be to be anything but. If that isn’t the most small-minded and rube-tastic thing I’ve heard. |
Except 100% of those hiring for jobs $75K and above have. |

If you are in Ohio, you go aspire to Ohio State and you hate Michigan; similarly if you live in Michigan, you aspire to UMich with Mich State as a backup and dispose the state of Ohio. Iowa? techie, you go to ISU, otherwise, UIowa.
That is you aspire to the state school. Alabama: Auburn or Alabama (and you hate the other). Clemson or USC SC; NC has UNC or NC State. ... |
