DP. It’s so interesting (and telling) that you blame all of this bias on one “certain political party,” conveniently ignoring the OTHER political party which is heavily biased - at least on this site - against those “racist, redneck, frat boy” schools in the south and Midwest - I mean “flyover country.”
What’s “odd,” is you blatantly calling out the political party you detest, with zero acknowledgement of your own political party’s constant bias. Get over yourself. |
No, the hilarious part is the utter lack of self-awareness on the part of those who are offended by a term like “real America,” yet have no problem at all constantly disparaging those who live between the coasts. DP |
DP. I don't think that "coastal elite" would appreciate the name I would really use for her. |
OP, I think I understand your question. Yes, in the places that you deem "real America," the drawing board is different. Most kids there would never consider an Ivy League school. The big decision is which state school (in SC, Clemson, USC or maybe the Cof C if you really want to party), or a SLAC in the area. Naturally, a hierarchy of sorts develops even among schools at this level and for the people who live in that area. Generally, Clemson is considered the hottest ticket. |
Yawn, this faux outrage re "flyover country." There's no way someone flying over came up with that term, by definition they aren't thinking about what's down there. It's the people in flyover country who use it to draw attention to the fact they're being ignored, by the "coastal elite" blah, blah, blah. Use whatever language you want, you're unlikely to get through. |
I don’t think it’s 1 political party. |
My husband is from the Midwest. I love it there. But sure — keep justifying your nastiness by assuming I’m as nasty as you are. |
Do you consider the New Yorkers who died in 9/11 to not be real Americans? |
I live in Montgomery County and 70% of people have never heard of Amherst. |
Look I found a number in my butt! |
As the author of the above screed, I would like to make the obvious point that I never called out the 40% who live on the coasts. I only talked about the standard idiot posters on DCUM. Yes, you richly deserve the appellation of "provincial pseudo-elitist snobs." |
Excuse me what?! What the hell have I said to you to earn that name? |
| Upper Midwest here. HYPSM are obviously well-known and coveted schools, but outside of that, the Big Ten schools are great schools (some of the best research institutions in the entire country), and are a natural option for a lot of smart kids. Think Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue. And for the far more ambitious and academically oriented kids, there are Northwestern and UChicago (although of course if you're in a position to send your kid to NU or UC, you're also part of a class of people that would also consider sending them to any of the Ivies or Stanford). Seconding that names like Amherst are not even known among the general populace. |
Wow you’re a very angry person. On behalf of all the idiot posters on DCUM that you obviously can’t avoid reading, we are so very sorry. |
DP here. It's a little funny to see east coast folks creating this fantasy that they're being discriminated against in this thread. Pretty thin-skinned if you ask me, considering that the derision and ridicule of folks from "flyover country" are way, way more pronounced than the other way around. Provincialism exists in equal measure in most parts of this country. I'm sorry but no one is ever going to convince me that someone from Boston or Philly (or even DC/NOVA) is more "sophisticated" than someone from, say, Chicago. |
