Anonymous wrote:What is "real America"? Honest question. Nearly 127M people live on the US East/West coasts, which makes it about 40% of the total population. Why do people insist on discounting 40% of the US population as not being the "real" America?

Maybe because you twits call 60% of America "flyover country.". Do you folk even read the drivel on DCUM? I won't send my kid to the South because of the racism... Wisky is Naziland... etc etc...
You expect people to worship the shit your Ivy League kid steps in.
There are elite, good and mediocre colleges spread throughout the country. Most people don't know much about any elite colleges. DCUM posters seem to have quite limited knowledge of most colleges outside of the Ivy League and maybe NESCAC.

And you all don’t stereotype us so-called “coastal elites”? I’m damn sick of you telling me I don’t live in real America.

As the author of the above screed, I would like to make the obvious point that I never called out the 40% who live on the coasts. I only talked about the standard idiot posters on DCUM. Yes, you richly deserve the appellation of "provincial pseudo-elitist snobs."

Wow you’re a very angry person. On behalf of all the idiot posters on DCUM that you obviously can’t avoid reading, we are so very sorry.

DP here. It's a little funny to see east coast folks creating this fantasy that they're being discriminated against in this thread. Pretty thin-skinned if you ask me, considering that the derision and ridicule of folks from "flyover country" are way, way more pronounced than the other way around. Provincialism exists in equal measure in most parts of this country. I'm sorry but no one is ever going to convince me that someone from Boston or Philly (or even DC/NOVA) is more "sophisticated" than someone from, say, Chicago.

The difference is that while we might think you’re nothing but a bunch of rubes, we don’t deny that you’re American rubes.

Yup. I have absolutely nothing against people who aren’t from the coasts, but if I say that I prefer to live in DC or NYC, it’s not because I don’t think the middle of the country is America.

For the record, I'm a New Yorker, but I don't agree with some of the baseless elitism that I see on DCUM and especially in the colleges forum. No one is saying you're not American or threatening to revoke your citizenship, calm down. What people CAN very reasonably say is that the world and experience that a certain subset of elitist snobs live in (certainly the ones who would stereotype any person not from the Northeast or West Coast as being "rubes") do not at all reflect the world and experience of the majority of Americans. So there ya go. If you're living in your tiny little bubble looking down at the rest of the country, I think the rest of the country has a little leeway to talk back a little. Don't worry, princess, it's nothing more serious than that.

I’m a New Yorker too.

You can call someone elitist without saying they’re not a real American. One is descriptive; the other is truly awful.

Also, once again: I have nothing against people who aren’t from the coasts. The fact that you keep describing me as though I do suggests to me that you yourself harbor those viewpoints.

Ah, yes, because what on earth could possibly be worse than not being an American? I shudder to think of how “awful” it must be to be anything but.

If that isn’t the most small-minded and rube-tastic thing I’ve heard.

You’re so dense.

This notion that some people aren’t real Americans culminated in the January 6th riots.

But sure — we’re overreacting.

Also, who the hell said this about being an American or not? Stop putting words in our mouths.

This is about citizens deciding other citizens don’t belong in their country. It’s exceptionally harmful language that Trump exploited.

Sorry you’re too stupid to get it.

Love how some people are deeply offended by not being considered "real Americans" yet are the same people who are actively seeking to censor those who hold different political opinions.

I dunno. Football, baseball, BBQ, speak English, do repairs themselves, eat apple pie, remember civics class in 8th grade.

Americas the only country in the world you can move to as a child, teen, adult and become a citizen, criticize everything about the country, and win a Congress seat.

What a country! Imagine trying that in Europe or Brasil or Iran or China!

This thread is highly entertaining, thanks OP!

Hmm kinda describes the community I live in in NoVa and the others I have lived in all over the northeast, other than doing repairs yourself, but then I'm not mechanically inclined and my car is basically a computer on wheels. But hey if you can do it, more power to ya! Whoops I forgot, that's "elite" territory... hmm then still struggling to define "real America"....

Oh am I'm curious... where did your "real" American ancestors come from? Mine came from Europe in the mid 1700s on one side of the family and from Europe again in the early 1900s... does that mean I'm a real American or do I need to be Native American, like you are I assume since you're so much more "real" than I am?

Nah, not triggered at all. My point was that it appears there were people on both sides triggered or did your individual bias get in your way? No matter, your post displays who you are, a dolt.
