Has he ever seen the poster of the US presidents? Has he ever looked at the breakdown of men/women in the Senate? The entire country was based around white men.

I was figuring that I’d find four American astronauts that looked different and hang them together. I counted over 30 posters. Only one white man, and he died in space. I am not putting that on DC’s wall. I’m all for representation, and I was figuring on having two men, including a white man and a male pic, and two women of color. I just can’t understand why white American men have NO place in a set of 30 posters. None. I’m not asking for our specific ethnic group, just a token appearance. Where is Neil Armstrong? How is this not discrimination?

Are you worried that your son is somehow getting the message that he can't be an astronaut? That astronauts are all women, or all POC? That's the only reason why someone would care that the picture was the same race or gender.

I'm the parent of all white boys. If one of my boys becomes a ballet dancer, I'll seek out pictures of male ballet dancers, because I would worry that otherwise he would absorb the message that ballet is not for him. But it would never occur to me to specifically seek out material to prove to him that some astronauts are white males, when the most well known astronauts are already white males.

Sure, and OP's kid can have them. But in a poster series specifically about "firsts," complaining that there's only one is very, very stupid. She can find different white guy astronauts for her kid's wall, but they won't be the first white guy in space because she doesn't want that one.

Damn. And I'm over here trying to make sure my DS isn't stereotypically pigeonholing men and women. And to make sure he sees females and minorities in positions of power. I try to buy more diverse colors and play toys for my kids. Like magnatiles that include purple, play kitchens for boys and baby dolls for boys.

I do want to talk about this more and appreciate the different opinions, including the flaming.

I just object to my kid not being represented as one of such a large group. It’s not like there are four posters and no white, American males, there are 32. Thirty-two!
