This is what my DH remembers from the 1970s, when he lived near IU. The KKK marched in the Fourth of July parade. |
Surely you know it’s one of the best conservatories in the country. Music schools are much more of a personal decision though - only your DC can know, based on meetings with professors on his/her instrument and visits with other students. |
Uh, lots of places had rampant racism in the 70s. Like UMD. I work there and we are still gearing the experiences of alumni in that era. |
Surely you know people are allowed to ask for opinions about universities. I mean FFS. |
NP and really, it's like asking if Iowa has a good writing program or if there are decent tech internships in Silicon Valley. |
+1 well said. Thank you! |
Agreed. My DC is at Illinois and exposure to ppl with different views and backgrounds than in MoCo is one of the values of going OOS. |
+1 |
A lot of kids from the DC area would learn more from humble, hardworking white kids from the Midwest than they would from entitled kids of any color from the DMV, but it’s not PC to acknowledge. |
Perhaps, but my kid also appreciates that Illinois is not “white, white, white.” It’s more diverse than you would expect. |
And Indiana has a large Hispanic presence. Just because certain people who claim to be liberal-minded don’t know these things doesn’t mean they aren’t true. Bloomington also had an extremely active LGBTQA+ community. |
No. Many do stay in the Midwest (lots of Chicago placements from the B-school) but there are also many, many alumni here in DC. |
Except OP specifically asked about the wider university. If your kid got into a fabulous program and you would not want feedback about the whole school, that's awesome for you. And even so, it's possible people on this board have kids that went to that conservatory and have specific advice. So let people talk and don't shut them down. |
AMEN!! +1000 says the Hoosier with kid in MOCO schools. OMG |
| huh, interesting, I went to Indiana University and it was very popular with Jewish students from the northeast. (Wisconsin and Michigan are, too.) |
