Kent Gardens Elementary School in Mclean

I do not post all the "thank yous" from the people who have been waiting for a forum to speak the truth about the school. Rather, there are real estate people who are concerned my blog will lower property value. I'm not sacrificing children for property value. Please read the "Bruises" page of the blog for another parent's treatment at the school and there will be probably more to come. http://www.peelbacktheapple.blogspot.com/

Is it true the PTA collects money at the beginning of the year for parties/teacher gifts, etc? What if your child has life threatening food allergies? Do you still contribute. I like to give teachers gifts when I think they are outstanding? Do you have toi give at the beginning?

Is the principal retiring or was that a rumor?

Are oarents welcome to volunteer in the classroom and make arrangements with the teacher or is their a momfia that controls everything?

you won't fit in there

There are plenty of kids who have allergies at that school, and accommodations are made for them just like any other Fairfax County School...no more, no less.

Call the school and ask. Go pay the school a visit, there's an entire room dedicated to engineering, projects, and plans.

Speaking of the blog, the moderator is in fact stating the truth about the school. She has kids in both in advance and in basic math. That blog is the only place you will get "transparent" communication about KGES. You can be the judge. http://www.peelbacktheapple.blogspot.com/

It's the truth based on her experience, and any inputs to the blog are usually from people who have an axe to grind.

That's takes some courage. Not sure I'd put my kid in a situation where the teachers and administrators know her mom is airing their dirty laundry, but typically every effort is made to sweep issues with any McLean school under the rug. More so than in any other area we've ever lived, administrators at McLean schools are enamored of the schools' great reputations and high test scores and totally lacking in common sense when asked to work with parents.

What's so surprising about a school district being proud of its achievements and reputation for excellence? It wasn't earned in one day, but can be trashed in one minute.

Was the reputation earned or delivered on a silver platter? It is no surprise that wealthy counties have good schools and poorer ones do not. The point is whether even the best schools can be improved. The answer is yes. Watch the Waiting for Superman Doc and you will see while the future will be bleak if we don't open our eyes to all the problems in education across our country. One can only start in their own backyard.

It's not surprising at all. However, it can be a crutch. Administrators may not actually work as hard as they do in other parts of the county, and students at their schools will still do well on standardized tests and in gaining admission to good colleges and universities.

What's wrong with administrators working hard?

What does a thread topic about KG ES have to do with gaining admission to a good college or university? Nothing.

I was offering my personal opinion as to why the other poster may have been frustrated with KG ES and decided to create her own blog about KG ES. You sound like a complete bitch!

Go buy some common sense.

There is indeed a correlation between what happens at elementary school and college. The City of Fairfax has an excellent discussion from the Superintendent about what parents should be thinking about right now.

Projecting your child's education through high school is not suggesting that your child shouldn't live and be a child and enjoy childhood. It is making you aware of issues you will have down the road that you can more easily adjust now if you are aware of them.

Up until a few days ago, I would have agreed that KGES is a good school albeit it a large one. But the way our IEP has been handled is beyond appaling. I would not feel confident sending a child with sn there. just my experience and I am sure there are parents who have a different experience but my own experience has been not positive.

Check out the Freedom Hill thread. It will explain why this guy is so hostile to any post about KGES that isn't glowing.

If there is a way to protect your privacy and still leave input, I think your experience will help drive change at that school. I have only heard about parents indicating the policy is that children have to perform one full grade level below their current grade in order to get help. I'm sure a lot of us agree that we want to step in as soon as we notice anything amiss and not wait one minute. We would all hope, the school, would be the source of our greatest support. It makes no sense. When we have a leak in our pipes, we don't wait for a flood before we fix it.
