+1. The shitty driver isn’t the one who gets to dictate the terms. If OP benevolently decides not to go through insurance, OP gets to select the service provider. And shitty driver can suck it up or get the ding on her insurance. |
You go through the insurance of the person who hits the car. |
No. You only call your insurance as a last resort. |
| Think was nice of her to contact you and tell you it was her fault; could have done a hit and run. Would work with her because of that but would want more say in who does repairs to make sure they are quality/wil last. |
|
If you don’t tell your insurance company, you are essentially committing fraud. You agree when you take out insurance that you will let them know within so many days of any accidents the car is involved in.

OP here:
Taken the car to get estimates which turned out to be around $850 (rental car cost is separate). Car repair shop people said that during repair, if they identify any thing else it will cost extra and may take longer. I informed the colleague about the estimates. Her initial reaction was that she is surprised that it is costing that much. She also mentioned that she did not consider that I may opt for rental car. Now I am a bit hesitant to go with her plan to pay for the repairs due to her surprised reaction. If at all, the cost of repair ended up being more than the estimate or if rental car had to be taken for longer (if car repair is not completed on time), then she may act more surprised. I want to let her know that it is better to go with car insurance. |
This is so common. Cars are expensive and not cheap to fix, especially if you have to paint. She will probably end up just going through insurance. How are you supposed to get to work when your car is the shop because of her?? |
| The cost to repair will almost certainly be more once they get in there. |
Please just go through insurance. If you have saved text messages or emails, send them to her insurance company too (just screenshot and email the adjuster). They will also cover your rental since their driver is at fault. But send the evidence b/c your coworker seems shady and may deny it. It's probably more than $850 and her mechanic is going to do a crappy job. You need this documented, esp if you have a newer car with newer materials and/or sensors, since those add up fast. You tried to work though it w/ coworker, but the fact that she is fighting the rental cost and questioning HER mechanic's (likely lowball) estimate is ludicrous and shows she's not working in good faith. Call her insurance and be done with it. |
+1 OP, colleague prob has done this before. If she is dead set against insurance, choose your own repairs/estimate, not hers. |
Ask her if she sure she wants to pay out of pocket for this. Tell her that you were also surprised it’s going to be that high and it could be higher and the. add on the cost of the rental, which could be pricy. |
Totally agree. True in 4 out of 4 of my/husband's experience. |
+1. And to OP - to be clear - you are not obligated to contact your insurance on this (if that's what you were asking). She wants to keep this off of her insurance. As long as this does not disadvantage you it's fine. |

Asking for car rental is petty. Remember your car will be flagged as an accident in car fax.
Also remember this is way after the fact, neither of you reported it to insurance company. If I was other driver I have you check for $850 My sister got hit twice both times got estimate at local body shop cash price. Told other person amount. They have her check. Neither time did she fix it. There is no timeline to fix it. Lot of time issues is miscommunications. I had some crazy lady in used Mercedes ask for dealership prices on a small scuff. She produced a quote. I ended up not paying. Told her to report it |
But other driver can do it. My wife’s car got hit while legally parked and other driver actually put in claim against my policy claiming she was illegally parked. Lucky my wife had pictures |
