Running list of lower/elementary schools reopening

Thanks for the info. It doesn't bother any theories of mine. I just want empirical data to make a decision on how safe, or not, it really is. What irritates me is all the parents who claim here that everything is going great, but hiding the numbers. If the numbers at all schools are as low as yours suggest, then people should make them public (either formally through the school, or informally by posting here). When people pretend there are no positives in their school communities, we all know they're lying.

Another sssas parent here confirming that the previous numbers given are accurate.

I think everyone was really pleased with how incredibly low the number of positives were. And I think the school deserves a ton of credit. Also, the school community is largely acting quite responsibly outside of school, which sadly can not be said of some of our friends at other private schools.

The Harbor School (Preschool 2s-2nd Grade) has also been open full time in-person since the start of the school year. All going smoothly with no cases so far.

To be fair I don’t think people are lying, but when they say “no cases so far” they should say “no known cases”, unless like sssas and others they are testing.

There are likely positives at every school, and if you don’t test you don’t know - but it can still be passed to someone outside the school community who could in turn get quite sick.

Right, also you will not be notified if your student is not in the infected cohort. The school is not sending out a schoolwide email if there is a localized infection.

Didn’t Stone Ridge have lots of outbreak problems?

No, Stone Ridge has not had a lot of outbreaks. There have been a few parents and a couple students who tested positive, but they did not come to campus and had not had interaction with anyone in the school community. The school followed state and local protocols and informed parents. In a couple instances, they've kept some classes home for a few days "in an abundance of caution," but then students returned when tests came back negative.

So you’re saying only two (“a couple”) students at Stone Ridge have tested positive? Or is it more? Just trying to be clear.

Congressional is open five days a week.

A case is not an outbreak. The Dept of Health would close a school down for a true outbreak. Have not heard of this happening. Have cohorts quarantined? Yes at a number of schools to avoid an outbreak

I know of 3 confirmed student cases at SR across the lower/middle/upper school divisions. Not sure if their siblings (who are also SR students) got it as well bc they would have been home quarantining as soon as their sister got a positive test.

I think it’s really important to understand that people are going to continue to get covid for a long time to come. The bar for schools is not “no cases” but rather “no transmission.” The protocols that are set for masking, cleaning, distancing, quarantining, testing, and communication are part of the effort to minimize transmission between students and faculty and staff.

^^ thank you, yes. People, institutions and economies needs to manage this, and not by paying people to hide in their homes.

In Virginia, an outbreak is defined as 2 or more cases from a single source (so a pretty low bar). VDOH has a dashboard for outbreaks in school/ educational settings. Outbreaks are reported and that information is open to the public. I am very happy with the very low number of outbreaks in all of Virginia, much less NOVA.

Oh please. All of the more expensive schools (not catholic or montessori) are regularly testing, so no, they aren’t hiding a covid outbreak.

This; My kids go to SSSAS. The school tested every student, faculty and staff member a few weeks ago and now does random antigen sampling every week. So far very good.

What does "very good" mean? How many positive tests in the school? Three? Five? Fifteen?

My kid's DC area private school is reporting to parents seven positive tests in the past month so far, and it's still going forward with reopening. I'm betting other schools have similar numbers.

Potomac has been open a while now and had one faculty positive (prior to opening) and one student positive since opening. They are continuing to test so we feel confident it’s a well thought out plan.
