Nicest non-flashy/showy large-ish SUV?

Ironic that pp praises Porsche and then calls Audi’s VW. If you look down on VWs, don’t look to closely at Porsche

Porsche has been treated as an independent entity since its buyout. The 911, Boxster, Cayman, Taycan, and Panamera (i.e. the cars they are known for) are all on their own platforms with little to no parts-sharing with VW.

The Macan and Cayenne are their biggest sellers and based on VW platforms to keep costs down. The suspension geometry has been adjusted and they are really good to drive. As in they feel like a different car and are consistently rated best in class in the compact and mid-size lux SUV segments.

I'm not a Porsche guy or owner, but Porsches definitely don't have the same "posh VW" feel as an Audi.

Large American SUV (Yukon, Exploreer, and obviously bigger) are obnoxious and no one needs that big of a vehicle - you can't even park it.

Honda Pilot is great, OP.

Audis are not basic and everyone does not have them once you get outside the DMV.

Not the PP but they really are. Audis don't drive as well as BMW or Porsche. They're not as comfortable and luxurious as a Mercedes or Lexus. None of their products are segment-leading.

They are mostly bought by people who don't really know cars and choose the car they drive based on image and what others think of them.

quatro is much more highly regarded than x-drive or whatever Porsche is packing into it's SUVs. Ride quality is really the only reason to. get an Audi

You're kind proving my point that Audi owners are not car people.

"Quattro" is a marketing term which could mean one of 3 different AWD systems depending on the model. The Cayenne has locking diffs and detachable sway bars so it's going to be significantly more off-road capable than anything Audi makes.

I shopped for this last year and got the Hyundai palisade. comfortable, lots of safety features, teens able to get in 3rd row. AWD etc. but no one looks at it and thinks flashy.

Ummm a car?

Before the car companies started chasing bigger profits and killing the planet we all managed just fine with cars.

But all of the marketing has convinced everyone they need SUVs - don't want to be showy - show some common sense and get a mid size car.

A lexus is not particularly flashy.

Lexus is a Toyota so buy a Toyota.

Before they started making clothes out of cultivated woven fibers, we were all just fine wearing animal skin and straw. Human agriculture is killing the planet! All that marketing convinced people that they need soft britches - toughen up and deal with the chafing.

NP. I really wanted to like this car, but I wasn’t a fan of the leather, and the second and third rows seemed tight given how big the exterior looks. I’m coming from a van though so everything feels tight.

VW Atlas is very comfortable - even in the third row

When trying to be clever it really helps to actually be clever.

There is nothing wrong with progress and human agriculture is not what is killing the planet though the excess quantities of meat we now consume in the west are certainly exacerbating things.

There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of advances in transportation including using cars. But SUVs are for most people silly extravagances that unnecessarily waste gas and make everyone less safe all so they don't have to bend over strapping their kid in a car seat or have their kid sit next to each other or to signal their wealth or bro-ness to everyone else on the road.

Doesn't this prove that they are, in fact, "showy"?

Not showy, PP1 said Audis are “basic” and PP2 said Audi is not “basic” and their Audi makes them unique and noticeable.

Audis are VWs.

x10000

The fact that people pay that much for a VW is mind blowing.

Agree, but this is DCUM. Intelligent thought has no room here.

Really like the full-length Suburban. Downsides are having to climb up into it, and low gas mileage.

Another vote for Telluride. I really need to buy a car and it's top of my list for the same reason.

I want a Suburban and live in DC but all the moms in suburban MD will think I’m a country yokel. What do you think I should do?

Same! We just got the 2021 palisade calligraphy trim. It’s awesome but not super flashy.
