The meeting was moved, not canceled.

Why was it moved?

It is now on Friday 10/2

The plan must be imploding for the meeting to be moved by a whole day.

And how many of the six admitted decided to attend? I believe most if not all concluded TJ was not going to be a welcoming environment and declined the offer.

They certainly didn’t think that when they spent time, money and effort applying over the period of months.

That is a ridiculous assumption. Many kids might apply to keep their options open, even if they have reservations.

What does "they are entitled to be set up" mean?

Required by Virginia laws and regulations regarding regional governor school.

Why are they just complaining about this now? They likely are on very shaky legal footing if they have been fine with FCPS doing all of the work for the past 30 years and are only getting upset now.

Did you know that 70% of the students from LCPS in the class of 2024 came from the same prep company?

It appears that FCPS has requested and received waivers from the state DOE that would otherwise require TJHSST to have a regional governor board. Since Atif Qarni would likely support FCPS's proposal to transform TJ, it's not obvious his department would stop granting FCPS a waiver.

Answer the question, please.

They would have probably not made it with a lottery system anyway. What is your point? 17 Blacks are projected to be admitted in expectation with the lottery. If you know any statistics, it means there is a good chance less than 6 are admitted. Especially, if other people apply more. 17 is based on all qualified people applying. Are you implying they would be happier and more likely to accept with greater White proportion? Because that is more likely than not to happen. Law of large numbers and many many more Whites in the qualified pool.

Answer the question, please.

Zero. And who knows why? What is your point?

That's right. Zero Black students in the Class of 2024 at TJHSST.

You cannot be an anti-racist and think that discrimination against Asians is the problem here.

Lack of blacks is a problem. Perpetuating white dominance is more of a problem that negatively affects all minorities.

Think long term and big picture. In addition, even if the 17 blacks are admitted, they may make similar calculations and decide not to come to TJ.

.

That was when other jurisdictions did not object. Now they do due to Brabrand’s excellent preparations and consultations prior to submitting his proposal.

The lottery is a much better idea than you understand. It's not just about changing admissions but is about changing the school, the makeup of the school and the school culture. With a different school culture, six or seventeen students might choose to come instead of choose not to.

It may be hard to admit that there's room for improvement in the culture of TJ. But there is.

TJ is not perfect. But what is the cost to your said benefits? People accusing us of racial cleansing, substantially affecting local economies, pulling down the entire student body’s future achievements? It is a fact that people do not value what they get by chance. On top of that, 0 black students may be picked or decide not to come. Then these efforts will be all for naught with all these negative effects!

Anonymous wrote:TJ admissions is sucking up all of the energy of the school board. I would hope that they would tell Brabrand to go back, so his homework and give them options in the early Winter.

Right now return to school should be the number #1 priority. This is ridiculous

So much this.

There are ways to return kids to school that don’t results in teachers, DL parents and in person parents tearing each other apart

There are ways to reform TJ that don’t involve every stakeholder in the state arguing with each other.

He can’t manage and he can’t lead. And he thinks he can solve complex problems without community input, and most importantly, input from stakeholders.

Why weren't teachers consulted on his stupid hybrid plan. Everyone in the country turned on everyone else. And it wouldn’t have happened if the first thing he had done was met with principals and teachers and determined what they needed to feel comfortable returning to school. They made people, including teachers, decide, but didn’t have a written mask policy. It’s incompetent.

Ditto TJ. It is a Regional Governors School, and other jurisdictions just wrote huge checks for the renovations. How did he not consult them, and the members of the TJ community and the FCPS community and the state legislature before developing this plan. Everyone wants more AA students. But FCPS is only 9-10% AA. Even if they get full representation, would they want to attend? And no one is talking about Hispanic kids, which make up a much higher percent, but are also much more likely to be ELL. It’s a complex problem. He can’t make a decision by fiat.

We need a real leader and a real manager.

So is this Asians complaining about whites stacking the deck against them, or whites complaining on behalf of Asians about whites stacking the deck against them? So hard to keep up with how exactly the privileged choose to posture.

One thing is clear - when Black, Hispanics and low-income voices speak up, they are ignored by many current TJ parents and students, who then turn around and ask whey they aren't more vocal.

+1 Yep.

It's better to "move" the meeting (to a Friday no less!) than outright cancel the meeting.
