Why are people gaining weight during corona?

Anonymous
Boredom. When I am at home I tend to eat more as I cook and while I sit at home, even working, snacks come to my head. When I used to work out, I could do 36 hour fasts like nothing. Bcs I was out of the house and I had the will power not to go and buy food and not to eat. Home and food I assoiciate in my brain.
However, I have not gained weight bcs I walk a ton now. In fact, I might be a few lbs down. But, my work is sitting and writing so it is easy to grab food, bcs my brain is bored and food is easy.

I am much busier now than I am in regular times because I have three kids at home who need help and watching. So my work gets down around their schedules. And I used to walk/Metro for my commute, so I naturally got some exercise that way each day.

And my usually exercise is tennis and swimming, both of which are currently closed. But I don’t think I would have time to do either anyway- what time?

Do you have problems understanding other people's perspectives in real life, too? You may be the same weight, but be careful not to lose or damage your friendships with your "curiosity." It's a lot easier to lose a few pounds than to restore trust.

People have reasons (excuses) to explain (justify) everything. My friends know who I am and they obviously feel my goid qualities outweigh the bad. One if my good wualities is my honesty and I don't nake excuses. If I gain weight, I admit I consistently overate. It's simple.

Dp honestly? Who cares what YOU do. Why do you care how orhers are coping? It is literally NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

Ah the person who likes to explain (exuse/justify) being an ahole under the mantle of being 'really honest' (tactless).

Stress eating peanutbutter and after kid beverages (moderate but nightly)prob are my biggest comfort/nemesis at the moment.

Stress eating, comfort food, boredom.

OP here and I really, really, didn't mean to offend anyone. It is true that I have "no clue" what it's like to be a parent yet. DH and I are thinking about it. I only know from my sister's experience and she has not gained weight due to her little one always running around. So I asked, because I was curious as to what others' experiences were and I guess I was very wrong about having "more time." But some people did say comfort eating was a thing.

Again, I never intended to shame. While I say I don't stress eat, I did say that I tend to overeat in other situations - being at work, being bombarded with fast food options at the office park, being too busy with work and social engagements to be mindful of healthy eating. My habits are not better than yours; just different.

Good point. I guess school-age kids are the main thing. My husband and I don’t have kids yet, and I know my sister has her hands full chasing after her 4 year old so she hasn’t gained weight. I guess I’m less tempted by the fridge than by all the restaurant options by my work office. And I don’t stress eat, but I am more likely to eat unhealthy when I’m really busy, and these days without commuting or social engagements I am anything but busy.

Oh, you’re cute. Talking down to people about weight gain on a parenting board when you’re not even a parent and therefore have no effing clue what parents are going through.

Agree. Life pre-children vs with kids is entirely different. Add in depressed spouse and utter lack of free time. I’d probably be finishing extra coursework and logging miles as a single child free person. Instead I had chicken nuggets for dinner.

I don't have more free time. If anything, I have less Sure, I'm not commuting, but that saves me a whopping hour a day. On the flip side, I am working full-time and oversee DL, plus preparing three meals a day and cleaning (so many more dishes!) and all the other household stuff I had before. And I'm not *literally* running after my kid all day -- she's seven. I can't just go to the gym or take a walk at lunch, because I have childcare responsibilities that I didn't have in the office. The people with all the extra free time are people without kids.

Seriously this. Are you nuts, op? Schools are closed, camps are cancelled, my kids aren’t leaving the house. Everyone has to get fed, laundry done. My 10yo is so depressed from the loneliness he curls up in a ball crying on a regular basis. My 8 yo is bouncing off the walls. I’m trying to take care of everyone’s emotional and physical needs. I’m at the bottom of my list. I’m eating too much. I’m drinking too much. I have deadlines at work. I’m on the PTO board. I’m up at 3 am juggling it all. Yea for you, you’re not busy. Come on over, I have 12 loads of laundry that need folding.

Freaking this!!!! OP, maybe go play dumb on a massage board that doesn’t have “moms and dads” in its name.

Oh please. Do you really believe yourself? Anytime you are asking about "why did you do X" especially weight you are judging people! It is right in the question!! How can you go about life and not know this? Unless you are trying to troll people.

WTF is wrong with you, PP? Your kids are allowed to leave the house. Please, for the love of god, take your kids on a walk or a bike ride or let them see their friends outside. I can't STAND people who think they have to be cooped up INDOORS. Are you freaking kidding me? Yesterday was 80 degrees and sunny with no humidity. People who say they are cooped up in any way are simply wallowing in their misery like they get off on it somehow. You are allowed to go outside.

Seriously. I hate the people who are keeping their kids cooped up indoors for absolutely no reason. Other PP -- maybe if you let your kids play outside, your 10yo wouldn't be depressed and your 8yo wouldn't be bouncing off the walls.

You're a bad parent. Honestly.

I've gained about 5 pounds after being a consistent, healthy weight for my whole life.

I have less stress and when I'm stressed I can't eat.

I've been baking with my kids a ton.

My workouts have changed without gym access and working from home, I just move less.

Being home all day, I have much easier access to food instead of only eating what I packed for worked that day pre-covid.

Overall, though, I feel great and I'm still a healthy weight so I'm not too worried about it. I gained this in the 1st 6 weeks or so and haven't dropped it, but haven't added anymore. Not going to stress about it. I think it's possible that when/if I go back to a normal in-office work schedule and to the gym (maybe???), I might drop it. And if not, oh well.

1. I use to do yoga 3x a week and spin 2x a week in addition to walking my dog 30 minutes most days. Now I walk 1 hour a day and it is not the same.

2. My college aged kids are home and they both are athletes and need tons of fat and protein in their diets, so I cook what is healthy for them, it's not healthy for me.

3. I am not out of the house in the evening going to sports events, volunteering, etc so I am at home... my H says want me to make you a drink, I say yes.

4. I am "eating out" way more than I did ever in my whole life. Small businesses are at a huge risk of failing. I am supporting local small businesses by getting food to go.

Now that everybody is back into school I am going back to eating well so I hope to lose 15 lbs by Thanksgiving. I lost 3 already just having the college kids out of the house.

I can't believe this is a real question.
