Why are people gaining weight during corona?

Anonymous
Why have I gained a little weight (prob 5 lbs at this point)?

I can't go to the gym. I'm working crazy hours at home and now doing school with two elementary schools kids. I go from one seated position in front of a computer to another seated position in front of computer. I'm totally sick of cooking at this point and am eating less healthy.

I don't get the people who have more time on their hands. Not my experience.

All these reasons are same for me, but I've gained at least 10. And I drink pretty much every night now.

For me, I’m more likely to gain weight when I’m working all the time and sitting my arse in the car then the office and more inclined to eat out. Now, if you’re staying home or “quarantined” you’re probably not eating out as much, and unless you’re an essential worker, you’re working from home which means more time either running after your kids or more time to work out, and more time to cook. So why this whole thing about putting on weight this year as opposed to any other when you’d be more busy? What is causing it, among those who do? Honest question.

WOW. Are you this out of touch?! Seriously...

Life before corona:

6:00: get up, get kids up, get everyone ready including myself, walk dog; put on actual clothes with zippers, and out the door by 8

8:30: get to work, grab a latte for breakfast, between my desk and several buildings several times a day, taking stairs all day long. Eat a boring healthy lunch that I bring or walk 10 minuts to get sushi at whole foods, amother 10 minutes back

4:30: leave work, get to gym or class 3 or 4x/week while spouse or sitter picks up kids from school, takes them to classes etc, 2 days I do it.

6:30: home, and heat up quick dinner (made on w/e, preplanned, easy), do dinner, baths, bedtime, clean up, etc

10 pm: shower, read, bed.

Life during corona

7:15, roll out of bed, put on my fat pants, maybe walk the dog, get kids breakfast, spend 20 minutes helping them find whatever random thing they need for today's random zoom art lesson. brush hair, put on decent top if important meetings and maybe mascara.

8 am to noon. shuttle back and forth between kids, meetings, kids, meetings. about 22 steps only.

noon: make lunch for kids and myself. clean up the random crap that keeps accumulating, walk dog

1-5 pm: shuttle back and forth between kids and meetings. walk dog, think about biking.

5-6 pm: stress drink #1, keep working while kids zone out in front of tv

6 pm: make dinner for everyone or get take out, have another glass of wine eat it, play games, clean up. baths, bed for kids.

9 pm-10:30 do another hour of work that I never finished during the day

11 pm doom scroll, feel depressed, eat some chocolate. fantasize about traveling.

midnight: tell myself I will get up at 5 am to exercise. rinse and repeat.

I used to go to the gym every day. Now I do lame walks. I also go out to eat to just feel free and get out of my house.

You have less time if you have kids.

You have more time if you don’t have kids.

OP, you sound out of touch because you don’t have kids. If you had kids, you’d know. Especially elementary school aged kids that you aren’t “chasing after” but also can’t be left to their own devices (figuratively or literally)

Basically, anyone who has children ages 5-15 is probably in the no time to exercise/stress eating boat.

You have adequately captured my life. Except I’d probably add another drink in the 9-10:30 block.

I used to go to the gym 3-4 times a week, and swim several days a week during the summer. Both options have been closed since March.

I spend much less time walking — since the places I would walk to or walk in are now either unavailable or are now quick, goal-oriented trips.

I’ve been eating lots more carbs — partly from stress, partly from not having a defined schedule, and in large part from several months of eating more shelf stable foods and frozen foods as a consequence of shopping less (every 2-3 weeks vs 2-3 times each week).
Over the weeks and months the consequences of more carbs, more salt, more stress, and less regular exercise add up.

You sound pretty out of touch yourself. Some people have more time, some have less, regardless of their status as a parent.

Eating more & moving less.
Also, my commute involved a 3 mile daily walk. My husband biked to work.
Our commute now is walking to the dining room table
