Upspeak and vocal fry on work conference calls

Why don’t y’all just stop policing the way women talk? This is just another sexist way to dismiss women in the workplace.

Upspeak makes you sound uncertain. That’s not misogyny. Women should unlearn it stay and also get rid of the vocal fry, which may also have its roots in trying to temper ones assertiveness.

ditto. If you use upspeak or vocal fry, I immediately have no interest in what you have to say and have definitely chosen not to hire candidates because of this. Grow up.

Do you know how much you are missing out on? If you can't listen to someone who doesn't have a perfect delivery, whatever "perfect" means to you. That is truly sad because it's so limiting.

Not PP, but I agree with her. Vocal fry is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I’m going to have to miss out on what they’re saying because I can’t take it- it’s so awful. Upspeak doesn’t bother me unless it’s extremely exaggerated.

My defense contractor company FORCED over 40 people to go to professional, week long speech/communication training. Cured all the upspeak, all the "sooo...." Luckily we never had any vocal fry - engineers don't vocal fry.

You sound like the emotionally immature person here, so maybe listen to your own advice?

Same - no way I'm listening to that crap. When people use upspeak in a meeting, I go out of my way to ask if they had a question. "is there a question in there for the team? Oh, it sounded like a question"

You are blinded by your own perfection. That is sad to miss out on so much. So many Ted talks, podcasts, audio books, conversations, meditations.

Forcing yourself to sound like you're talking into the back of a box fan is not my cup of tea, sorry. I will not hire someone who uses these tactics and if there is already someone at the firm who talks like this, I will ask them to stop. It's unnatural and screams millennial space cadet.

I agree but still find it so annoying!

Wow, you manage to even write in upspeak! Well done!

I’m curious do people know they’re doing this (vocal fry)? I think women use upspeak because they’re trained to lack confidence in a group of men. There are so many men in my office who speak with complete confidence when they have no idea what they’re talking about and incredibly intelligent women who are insecure.

I find it extremely distracting. How people don’t understand basic preset skills is beyond me

It's a global pandemic. I like seeing my colleagues any way I can. They're all good people who do good work.

There are lots of real, actual problems in the world. I don't notice the petty BS.

Anonymous wrote:Ira Glass has the worst vocal fry and no one ever complains about it because he’s a man. Your internalized sexism is showing. Just get over it, some people talk differently from you.

Ira Glass was the original vocal fry. It was kind of idiosyncratic to him, so in my opinion he gets a pass. Then other people started doing it and now it's common.

You should watch the movie In A World about people doing voice over work and vocal coaching.
