No, that’s not what I meant. We would quarantine for 2 weeks in Maine hotel. No beach or leaving hotel, if we are in Residence Inn with full kitchen. My DC would then be able to attend camp, and we could afford a few days at beach in Ogunquit after quarantine.

Assuming your kid is also coming from out of state, he would be subject to the quarantine rules too.

Of course! The only reason we would go to Maine to quarantine would be to ensure DC could attend camp after quarantining. I like Maine, but I would never purposely drive all the way up there to quarantine for 2 weeks in order to spend a few days at the beach at the end of the quarantine.

“Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Heather Johnson announced the change during a daily news briefing on the state’s response to the coronavirus.

Johnson said visitors from outside of Maine were still being asked to quarantine for 14 days after getting here but she also said the state had no enforcement protocol for the quarantine requirement.

She said the change was made to accommodate owners of second homes who wanted to be able to travel inside Maine during the summer. But when asked during a media briefing if the quarantine rule was essentially an honor system, Johnson said it was.”

I don’t know how they’re enforcing it for people who are going to Air BnBs or people’s houses.

I mean, basic common sense tells you that it would be really hard and expensive to enforce something like this.

I get that they don’t want people importing the virus from hot spots like N.Y. and DC. There is talk of trying to ramp up testing by July 1 so they can lift the quarantine requirement and take another approach. I do find it ironic that the locals were resentful of summer folk coming to their homes in March, and now they’re begging the governor not to keep us (and others) away. If anything, the risks are greater now.

Tourism is their biggest industry.

I feel sorry for the people who are looking at a summer of no or very few tourists and realizing how that will destroy their livelihoods.

But how would they prove they quarantined? Do they carry around a date of state entry document and quarantine completion document or something?

It is mandated that all out-of-state travelers coming into Maine, as well as Maine residents returning to Maine, complete a 14-day quarantine upon arrival. This means:

You need to arrive with enough food for 14 days or arrange to have food delivered to you. You cannot go out to grocery stores.
Stay at home. You cannot go out to public places.
Avoid contact with others, especially those who are at high risk of severe COVID-19 illness.

There is no order to quarantine for people who make short trips back and forth across the border for work. Travel should be limited to essential trips.

Given that there will openly be no enforcement, and hotels can take reservations of less than 14 days, this seems to be confusing, disruptive, economically damaging, and with likely very little benefit to the public health situation.

I hope the Governor provides some clarity over the next couple weeks.

We are hoping to be in Rhode Island for a few weeks this summer. I would gladly quarantine to be there right now! I understand that RI still has a the 2 week quarantine for out of state people in place.

Are you able to walk on the beaches? East Matunuck State Beach is my favorite. And Salty's food.

I think state beaches are back open for walking with more limited parking than normal. And a couple of my friends have raved about takeout from Matunuck Oyster Bar. I also love that beach-the last time I went there the water was full of salps (they are sea creatures that are kind of like living orbeez, which sounds like it could be gross but it was amazing.
