It bears thinking about. Why waste 4 years on tuition for a college education that is not the same value as the money you put into it? And your kid is a barista in Starbucks? Why go to college for the sake of going to college when the education is worthless?

Oh c’mon, that says more about you than about the schools. All three have a national profile. Elon gained its reputation most recently, so if you’re old and don’t know many young people I guess I can see not having heard of it, but St Joe’s is a well known Catholic school and kids went to Furman from my Pennsylvania HS way back when. It’s a well known SLAC with a preppy southern reputation.

I have known people who have been happy at each of them. I think Elon might have a cushier feel for students compared to St Joe’s, which is in a slightly odd location, straddling the Philly city line, divided by a major road, and not really walkable to much off campus (although shopping and culture is a short drive away). I think St Joe’s has typically had a fair amount of business majors and a preprofessional vibe. I also think, but don’t have stats to back this up, that St Joe’s draws a more PA/NJ crowd compared to Elon (though there must be plenty there too), and certainly Furman. My colleague’s kids at Elon have done a crazy amount of travel/study abroad, so that might be something to compare. I think they are schools with good reputations and can set a student up well for whatever they want to do. A HS friend who went to St Joe’s then went to Harvard Law and graduated there summa cum laude. Good luck!

OP here. You are a treasure trove of info! Thank you!

Poor student, bad grades friend from HS went there. Has incredible career, lives in one of the fanciest suburbs.

OP here - I do not think grads of any of these schools end up at Starbucks. They may not be T20 but they are still among a small group of excellent colleges.

Only drawback to Elon is if student a big SJW.

So the education at these three schools is “worthless”? I don’t get it.

Elon has an ever growing reputation. When I went there, it was a combination of kids from the Northeast, Mid Atlantic and NC. They recruited heavily in the DC, Philly, NYC, Boston metro areas. Some of my closest friends from college grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

My roommate was a business/finance major. Long story, but she's now a teacher. She worked in business in NYCity for a few years, but found teaching to be her true calling. My friends from Elon are working in all types of jobs. Several of us work in govt contracting (with Comms degrees!), in marketing and sales, as writers, actors, doctors and physical therapists. The study abroad was phenomenal when I went, so I'm sure it's even better now. There are so many opportunities on campus for volunteering (everyone does it), extra learning activities, sports for non sports people, internships, etc. Greek Life was big when I was there, but not sure if people still do that or not.

It's located in a sort of smaller town in between Raleigh and Greensboro, called Burlington. I was just back there a few months ago and Burlington has everything you would need and more.

I remember going to Furman a few times for events, and it felt smaller and a little more insular than Elon. I don't know much about St Joe's.

Elon, Furman, and St. Joseph’s are not among them.
