| Sidwell to clarify |
Our children are at a school regularly competing against both schools. In general I have not noticed such behavior from Sidwell boosters. Not saying it doesn’t happen, I’ve just noticed them to be regular, encouraging parents. However I have definitely seen it from GDS parents, who when present are either hyper critical or just not paying attention. And if there are cars parked illegally in the lot when you arrive, more than not those are cars with GDS bumper magnates. It could be the school lacks a booster culture. As far as I’ve seen from GDS parents we know from other parts of our life (former K-8 peers and from our work and house of worship), I can see that being the case. The parent behavior was troubling enough that we discouraged our children from considering the school when applying into HS. |
One thing that GDS definitely does not lack is a "booster culture." GDS boosterism seems to be in the DNA. |

I know both schools very well. There are a couple of differences. Sidwell's campus is better and will always be better because they have more open space and more athletic fields. That is not going to change with GDS' new campus.
Sidwell's environment is liberal but seems stiff and conservative compared to GDS. Other than that, you are basically fighting over different flavors of Haagen-daz. Academically they are both rigorous. A successful student at GDS would be successful at Sidwell and visa versa. For some reason, some GDS parents have a chip on their shoulder vis-a-vis Sidwell, but they really shouldn't. |
That is part of the understated culture of the institution. |
| Parent behavior from GDS is not bad because they are always getting pounded on the sports field. |

Actually there is, but sidwell parents like to pretend that there’s not. They have their differences, but nothing is night and day in terms of quality of education or college matriculation. Honestly this long-standing non-feud should just stop. In the middle of the Venn diagram, there are students who would like and do well at both. The non-overlapping parts will involve sports (somewhat program dependent, but sfs overall stronger), arts (gds has a great program), personality of the kid, a specific learning style that fits in one place or another, the feel of each school, secular vs religious. All the fights on here seem to presuppose there’s massive difference in the middle overlap. The productive conversations are elsewhere. |
Sidwell is kinda focused on their own school. They don’t sweat other folks unless it’s a sporting event. |
This. GDS suffers from strong inferiority complex. I guess blame the Clintons and the Obamas. |
I think they were smart because if kids at GDS had to pick up their backpacks they would hold a grudge about it. |
Except SFS people don’t care. |
| For what Ever reason when it comes to sports I think Maret brings out the most rabid fans at Sidwell -certainly for basketball |
It’s hard not to dislike Maret particularly if you have a sense of social justice and affection for your surrounding community. |
| Or are stupid |
