LOL "big 3"
It is seriously only a DCUM construct. There is never a conversation where someone refers to the "Big 3 DC Schools" |
“GSC” might be easier to say than “Big-3.” A bit like HYP. |
| Only if H stands for High Point. |
| “G” would logically see itself in the same position as “H.” |
| But the Big 3 see it more as High Point. |
It is a troll. |
| Doesn’t Sidwell help get into Ivy League schools? |
| Troll. |
Not necessarily. Ivy admissions are not a given for any of the Big-Three. Not as many GDS students get admitted to Harvard as the school’s reputation would suggest. |

We applied to GDS, Sidwell, and STA. DS was accepted to all three.
GDS and Sidwell admissions teams both had a sanctimonious vibe, but Sidwell was more full of itself. GDS’ teachers were different. DS really liked the GDS teachers and staff who were caring and fun. Sidwell teachers were fine, but less warmth and personal engagement. Kids at both schools seemed equally nice. DS disliked Sidwell and loved GDS. We have no dog in the fight, as DS ended up at STA. |
| As between SFS and GDS, which has an alumnus sitting on the Supreme Court? |
Prep has two. What is your point? |
Neither school is the deciding factor for elite college admissions - that is primarily the result of the parents’ pedigree. Both schools have a disproportionate represents of parents from elite colleges, hence their admissions records. Self selection is always a strong factor in preserving the status of the elite and thag is exactly what the Big 3 is about. |
This is true. Kids get themselves into top schools with a combination of track record and the secret sauce. Having that is one of the hooks to get into the private schools that care about this particular statistic (many don't). Over the years you notice that whatever HYP admissions say they are looking for in candidates, the private schools start culling the heard for those same things (note the new addition of crew to certain schools). When HYP wanted well rounded, so did these schools; when HYP wanted "pointy" kids, so did these schools. Not all of the students; just enough to have those high HYP admissions stats. It's what they are evaluated on. |
| The boys crew club team at Sidwell was a student initiative. It was not "culled" by the school in any way, shape or form. |
