Mommy blogs and dooce

Who the hell are all these people? LMAO

Rhetorical question.

The post seems to be about her dog dying but it is quite incoherent .

Dooce has a post up about her recent sobriety. In it, she talks about having been an alcoholic for what sounds like a very long time. It seems that she managed to hide it from essentially everyone during this time. I've been reading her blog since Leta was an infant and I am surprised. Did anyone else see it?

WOW. That was a lot.

I haven't followed her in years, but obviously something was going on and this seems to be it.

I imagine details will come out - from her - but it sounds to me like she ended up in physical danger and maybe her mom talked her into rehab? What a mess, but also what a great point about being able to do everything and hide it from everyone.

I'm going to ask to have this moved to Entertainment and Pop Culture.

I am familiar with long-term alcoholics, and can't see how someone could go sober on their own without medical supervision in a rehab or hospital if they've been drinking SO much for SO long.

But she IS prone to exaggeration. So who knows what the truth is. Weird that Jon left his kids in Utah with a drunk mom. I can't WAIT for Leta's tell-all book!

I feel bad for dooce's mom. Must be hard to watch your kid struggle like this and worry about the grandchildren.

Have you guys seen that girldgonechild (same era as dooce, maybe a wee bit later) is bisexual now and sort of poly? After Hal died she made a film and, while raising 4 kids basically on her own, just sort of threw away all old ideas about husbands and men and relationships. And MightyGirl is raising a trans kid. Good for them.

The Dooce drama reminds me of Fargo. You never know what extraordinary things lie just beneath it all or what's going on under the surface.

The thing that I couldn't stand about Alice on GOMI was that she would make fun of bloggers for making money off their blogs, especially when bloggers would try to have an "event" for fans that they charged money for, while at the same time Alice was begging for money from readers herself because (she said) she could not pay for the server, and then she ultimately switched it over to a pay site (or maybe pay for the forums?). Like, that's the same thing, Alice. You are the thing that you are making fun of, you're just funnier, but no less of a grifter (if you view blogging as grifting).

Ten years ago GOMI also had this weird, anti-momblogger vibe, like the feeling was that every blogging mom should get an honest job that contributes to the economy and stop trying to make money by telling stories on the internet. Like, point on the doll to where mommyblogging hurt you, Alice. Like, let's just allow these ladies to try to write their way out of diapers and simulac if they can and just see what happens because surely women telling one another stories about their families isn't the worst thing to ever happen on the internet. But wtf do I know?

I can’t speak for Alice or all GOMI posters, but the problem many people have with mommy bloggers, from Dooce right down to the insta influencers we have now, is that they’re exploiting their kids for money.

Alice seems to have big feelings about this Dooce announcement which is interesting, because Alice is an alcoholic herself. She was pretty open about her sobriety and involvement with AA several years ago, and then she fell off the wagon hard and hasn’t looked back.

Thank you, this made my day!

I feel vindicated for ignoring the entire mommy blog thing for the last decade.

Another victory for me.

I never got John taking off for NYC. I have my doubts about Heather, but that’s a problem.

Huh. I just read the post. I’ve been a Dooce reader for a long time (Since 2004 or thereabouts.) The alcoholism thing makes a lot of sense. The only other thing that would have made sense is bipolar ... maybe both? But yeah serious alcoholic makes sense.
