Did your girl grow more (in height) after she got her period?

Yeah i'm getting this too. Being short enough that it impairs your day to day living (e.g., being able to comfortably drive), or if it's a symptom of an underlying medical issue is one thing. But just being "short"? I'm 5'2" and doing pretty darn well. Married a really handsome dude 20 years ago who is 6'2" and my short body carried and pushed out two 8 1/2 lb. healthy babies who are now great, thriving teens. I have a fulfilling career and a nice income.

Besides, being shorter is related to being healthier and living longer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12586217

I’m fine with being short too (5’1”). Aside from not being able to over tall heads, I don’t mind. But my DD is short and she feels differently. She desperately wants to be tall. Kids assume there is some value in being tall, which there isn’t but it’s hard to see that when you’re in middle school!

— sincerely, a got period at 13, stopped growing senior year of high school, 5’10”, 40-something lady.

This happened to my sister too except she was really small so her 5 inches put her only about 5'5". I got my period at 13 also and grew only about 2 more inches to top out at 5'7".

There seems to be a lot of variation.

Or really tall? Of all the things we can worry about when it comes to our kids, I just don’t understand why their eventual height would be one of them.

Come on, people have been worrying about their girls being too tall (and their boys being too short) forever. That doesn't make it a good thing, but it is a thing.

Yes, but that was several decades back when parents worried about ANY deviation from the norm. I think most adults agree that it doesn’t matter, it’s the kids we have to convince.

Speaking about my own perspective, I am 5'7" and my DD is the shortest girl in her entire grade. Most people assume that she's two years younger than her actual age due to her size. So, in terms of kids no one wants to be the __est. Whether that's shortest, tallest, biggest smallest, kids typically don't think about these things if they are somewhat in the middle but think about it a lot when they are the __est. Secondly, when it come to height there is nothing wrong with being short... but if given the preference most people would want to be on the taller side of average. While I am not worried about my DD or the impact that being short will ultimately have on her life, in full honesty I wish for her that she would've gotten my taller genes.

I guess so? The concept of worrying (really, worrying?) about one of the only physical attributes that we literally have no ability to change in either direction just seems like a complete waste of mental energy. And I say this as a mother of an 11 year old girl who’s 5’6”. Some people are tall, some are short, and lots are somewhere in between. What’s to worry about?

I grew an inch in college, but was already 5'9" at the time. Not sure why, did not grow at all from the time I got my period until I was 18.

Same here but I topped out at 5’2.

Well, maybe because you are tall, so you don’t understand that being short is no different than being tall....except your view can be obscured! Lol! But, I do agree about first statement that no kid wants to be the “-est” that’s 100% true. I think we’ve all been there!

DD got her period at 14, I think? She grew around 3 inches since, and just from 17-18, hse grew an inch. She is almost 5'7" at 18. I think if she got it a bit later she would have been taller.

My daughter hasn’t had hers yet but I was barely 5 feet when I got my period at 12 and I’m 5’5” now. Most of the people I’ve been friends with since childhood got their periods between 10-12 and they are much taller now than they were then.

+1.

With all due respect, 5'2" is short. What kind of Hobbiton do you people imagine you live in?

I was 5’2” when I got my period at 12 and grew 4” my junior year of high school when I was 16. My parents are 6’2” and 5’2”.

My daughter is one of the shorter girls in her class at 11 years old and has no signs of puberty at this point. It’s kind of fun wondering when she’s going to have her growth spurt. (One of her brothers grew 4” in the 6th grade and that was amazing to watch.)
