Not to be too crass about it but Americans aren't the ones who threw produce at Camilla in the grocery lanes... |
| I like the fact that Helena Bonham Carter is 8 years older than Olivia Coleman in real life yet playing her younger sister in this, convincingly. |
| I’m not sure that I buy Charles’ sympathy for the former king. By all accounts, Edward was a Nazi sympathizer and, Wallis Simpson aside, probably made many other bad choices. By stepping aside, he gave himself freedom. Charles could have done the same. However, I do believe that his love life was in fact orchestrated. |
| I think Charles craved a kind word and a guiding hand from anyone willing to extend them. From what I’ve read one of the major reasons his marriage to Diana failed is that they both desperately needed parenting and neither was able to support the other, |
He was 32 when they married. Was neither a child nor young. |
Nonetheless, they were both still emotionally damaged from their childhoods. Neither had recovered. Diana was just starting to come into her own when she died. I think the shock and tragedy of Diana's death and then his marriage to Camilla had finally put Charles in a good place. |
I agree with a PP that he was hungry for kindness and loving role model. Edward as a Nazi sympathizer I don't think would have been such a dealbreaker for Charles, at least not at that time. Both of his paternal aunts married Nazis. His family is of German descent. Look, even Harry as a young man dressed up in a Nazi costume. He would never do that now, certainly, but I think the royal family had a blind spot. Not saying that Charles or Harry were in any way sympathetic Nazi ideology, just insensitive in some weird way to the cultural legacy. It makes sense to me that Charles felt so constrained, so voiceless and invisible, that he'd be drawn to the romantic drama of his uncle's life. He was young and probably had an idealistic image of his uncle. |
The shock and tragedy was his fault so he should have been remorseful and haunted. Had he not insisted (vehemently) that she be stripped of her HRH and Royal protection officers + vehicle rights when traveling outside of the U.K. she would still be alive. |
It wasn't his fault. The paps were giving chase, and Diana chose to get in a car with a drunk driver and not wear a seatbelt. The belt would have saved her life. |
The belt wouldn’t have saved her life. Have you seen the car? The entire thing is crushed. Meanwhile Prince Phillip walked away from a two-car crash last year in which his vehicle FLIPPED over and he didn’t even have a scratch at the age of 97. Why? Because all royals who retain protection are given access to vehicles with reinforced steel plating like the President and Prime Minister travel in. Meanwhile the occupants of the van he hit were younger women and had to be hospitalized.
|
| Are you saying Diana’s boyfriend’s chauffeur would have been driving a steel reinforced car (drunk) if Charles has been nicer to her?? |
I’m saying a private citizen wouldn’t have been driving her period. HRH requires strict protection protocols from vetted drivers, private security, and limited vehicle transportation. |
