I’m not sure that I buy Charles’ sympathy for the former king. By all accounts, Edward was a Nazi sympathizer and, Wallis Simpson aside, probably made many other bad choices. By stepping aside, he gave himself freedom. Charles could have done the same. However, I do believe that his love life was in fact orchestrated.
I agree with a PP that he was hungry for kindness and loving role model. Edward as a Nazi sympathizer I don't think would have been such a dealbreaker for Charles, at least not at that time. Both of his paternal aunts married Nazis. His family is of German descent. Look, even Harry as a young man dressed up in a Nazi costume. He would never do that now, certainly, but I think the royal family had a blind spot. Not saying that Charles or Harry were in any way sympathetic Nazi ideology, just insensitive in some weird way to the cultural legacy. It makes sense to me that Charles felt so constrained, so voiceless and invisible, that he'd be drawn to the romantic drama of his uncle's life. He was young and probably had an idealistic image of his uncle.
