Dear God please don't do this! An impatient woman ran over an 11-year old girl in our neighborhood who was crossing the street and killed her. The car in front of the line was waiting for the girl to cross the street and the idiot who will rot in hell was too impatient to wait one full minute, went around the car in front, and ran this poor girl over.

That is completely different than what the OP is describing.

It is exactly what OP is describing.

It's really not. OP is talking about people waiting in the intersection to turn left. This is someone going AROUND the first car in the line to turn left. The latter is exceptionally more dangerous.

Yes, it is. It is the same impatient, self-important attitude that says What I want is more important than traffic safety. I am more important than anyone else at this intersection.

You all really don't get it.

We're all talking about THE FIRST CAR IN THE LINE. In the WaPo article I posted, they made it clear that the FIRST CAR can wait in the intersection to turn. That's 100% legal.

No one is talking about any other car in the line doing anything but wait outside the intersection.

Until that care doesn't go and blocks the intersection. Are you purposefully obtuse?! It is illegal to make a left turn on red light. And you will get a ticket for that.

The WaPo article made it clear that if you are ALREADY in the intersection and the light turns red, you have right of way to complete your turn.

^^ so Post is the law now? I bet you that camera ticket cares.

Two PPs have said they would go around the first driver in the line to turn left. OP did not say this but they all have the same attitude that they know better than the driver with a clearer view of the intersection. Safety first. Not you.

If the driver can't drive properly - can't enter the intersection - then they shouldn't be on the road. "Safety first."

Yes, you won't get a ticket for that. Are people really this fearful when they drive? That they freeze and don't move at an intersection? They are going to get someone killed.

Yes, I understand the practical implications of entering and waiting to turn left. I do it. It's not legal. Neither is consistently driving above the speed limit.

Exactly.
Drives me freaking crazy that people not only commit traffic violations but get MAD and indignant when others don’t. Don’t honk at me when I don’t move into the intersection when I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete my left turn before the light turns red.

You are an incompetent driver. Consider Uber. Or the bus.

She is not. Look into the mirror, incompetent driver. Every intersection and time of day and knowing traffic patterns indicate a skilled driver, what is fine of a rural road is not fine on the intersection of Georgia and University.

Of course she is. Her incompetence and fearfulness will get someone KILLED.

If you are the first car waiting to turn, MOVE INTO THE INTERSECTION.

I'd rather not go around you.

Yes, people here do not go when they should if they entered the intersection. Where do you people live?! Do you know how many times these dweebs have backed into me after failing to make a left turn? They are on their phones, or freeze or just don't know what the hell they are doing. I drive here, where do you drive?!

If there is no room for you on the street you're turning onto then wait, but if that street is clear, move into the intersection.

If only.... in the DMV. Nope, not here, people block it, don't move, and then flip you off while they are in the wrong and sit in the middle on purpose when they failed to make a turn, go on green, etc...

Completely false

Keep dreaming. It's a logical outcome from don't block the box. You should never be hanging around in an intersection.

ONLY IF you can't make it through. If you, wake up and move into the intersection.

Not when I have kid carpool in car. Will never forget a tragedy years back—Mom driving 4 girls on cheer team to practice.

Reading comprehension issues?

OP said to move into the intersection if you are the first car turning left at a light.

Ok, I will when I get home. You'll still be sitting at the intersection. By the way blocking the box refers to blocking the crosswalk, not necessarily the intersection as you can pull out past the crosswalk if you are the first car, similarly if you have driven in the burbs for any amount of time there are many intersections that don't have crosswalks due to lack of sidewalks or even because of dense trees or some other reason.
