Move into intersection when turning left - WHY don’t people do this?

Anonymous
Those are the same people who make it impossible for a car turning left opposite them to be able to see around them if they can go. Screws everyone up.

Yes, I understand the practical implications of entering and waiting to turn left. I do it. It's not legal. Neither is consistently driving above the speed limit.

This. You can get a ticket being in the intersection when the light turns red.

See the WaPo article above. If the light changes while you're in the intersection, you have right of way to continue turning. However, only the front car in the line can do this.

I have received a camera ticket for being photographed in the intersection on red. - NP

Camera ticket is one thing. Those are honestly money grabs. The law is clear.

So ... your position is that I should get a camera ticket and then spend my valuable time fighting it, so that you don't spend your valuable time sitting an extra few minutes at a light (that you were going to sit at anyway, because you weren't the first car). No thanks.

Dear God please don't do this! An impatient woman ran over an 11-year old girl in our neighborhood who was crossing the street and killed her. The car in front of the line was waiting for the girl to cross the street and the idiot who will rot in hell was too impatient to wait one full minute, went around the car in front, and ran this poor girl over.

That is completely different than what the OP is describing.

It is exactly what OP is describing.

It's really not. OP is talking about people waiting in the intersection to turn left. This is someone going AROUND the first car in the line to turn left. The latter is exceptionally more dangerous.

Yes, it is. It is the same impatient, self-important attitude that says What I want is more important than traffic safety. I am more important than anyone else at this intersection.

Exactly.
Drives me freaking crazy that people not only commit traffic violations but get MAD and indignant when others don’t. Don’t honk at me when I don’t move into the intersection when I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete my left turn before the light turns red.

You are an incompetent driver. Consider Uber. Or the bus.

You all really don't get it.

We're all talking about THE FIRST CAR IN THE LINE. In the WaPo article I posted, they made it clear that the FIRST CAR can wait in the intersection to turn. That's 100% legal.

No one is talking about any other car in the line doing anything but wait outside the intersection.

You were stopped in the intersection waiting to turn? Or you ran a red light?

I go around if the first car won't move into the intersection and has just sat there for 1+ light cycles. Obviously, I don't do this wildly or near pedestrians. And I actually pay attention to the drivers and pedestrians around me. Unlike 99% of the idiotic VA drivers who have no clue what is happening around them. Or are on their phones or whatever.

Two PPs have said they would go around the first driver in the line to turn left. OP did not say this but they all have the same attitude that they know better than the driver with a clearer view of the intersection. Safety first. Not you.

This is the biggest reason.

The person turning left intends to use the yellow light to make the turn.

What if the oncoming car(s) intend to use the yellow to cross the intersection? Too many people speed up to catch the yellow these days making the "I'm-in-the-intersection-making-a-left-on-yellow" risky.

It's at a point where I judge this by the intersection & traffic pattern and not one size fits all.

Exactly, those of us who live here know which intersections are "ok" and which are not and even the time of the day when you can do this or not. Once I can turn left in this situation I move and make a turn, I am not new to traffic patterns here, and I don't hold up traffic if I can turn left safely. The moron that moved into the center when there is loads of oncoming traffic if the one keeping the traffic from moving. As well as all those oafs like op that do not permit people to go on green because they all piled up in the intersection without any space to clear it up. Op is a moron.

There is a reason for million sings, do not block the intersection..... they are for op.
Anonymous
I think some people are more cautious than me and choose not to enter the intersection until they are sure they can "clear" the intersection before the light changes. Not a big deal.

We have an intersection next to my neighborhood where I do not enter the intersection and wait to turn left. The streets do not intersect at 90 degree angles, the sight lines are bad and there are often pedestrian. Sorry.

She is not. Look into the mirror, incompetent driver. Every intersection and time of day and knowing traffic patterns indicate a skilled driver, what is fine of a rural road is not fine on the intersection of Georgia and University.

Wow. Ok.

First of all, the action OP was talking about is 100% legal, whereas going around the first car is absolutely illegal.

But sure -- continue to cast these things as equivalent.

Until that care doesn't go and blocks the intersection. Are you purposefully obtuse?! It is illegal to make a left turn on red light. And you will get a ticket for that.
