Magnet applications and DCC choice forms

Making it easier to apply doesn't "dilute" acceptance requirements. There is still a screening and selection process.

But if you are referring specifically to the language requirement, the need is for students to reach level 5 by senior year so they can test for the diploma in a language. Schools could offer a compacted language sequence (levels 1-3 in two years) or summer school to get kids there, if they didn't already have a year of language.

Agreed..being allowed to apply does not mean going to apply or going to be accepted. Kids generally know whether they want more challenge or not. Kids know if the can or want to have more work.

I think it would great to offer more summer language courses as well. Maybe they can't find qualified teachers?

My child is not enrolled in a World Languages class and still is eligible for admissions to the regional IB and the countywide IB. I actually spoke with the head of the IB program at the DCC info night and she said that being enrolled in at least level 1 of a foreign language is not a requirement this year (not sure if it was in the past or if that was misinformation). My child does has studied a foreign language outside of school (one that is not offered in MCPS) and she said that was definitely good enough. She said that she has heard from other parents that speak a foreign language at home or kids who study other foreign languages outside of school and they are not making it a requirement anymore (at least in part) for that reason.

The new regional IB program requirements say:

Enrolled in at least level I of Spanish, French, or Chinese or are bilingual in one of those languages

Yes, but I believe it is a mistake. If anyone wants to find out for sure, contact the head of RM IB and inquire. She told me that it's not a requirement. I am going to double check with her myself so my child can apply to the IB programs.

We called the person in charge of RM IB back in June and she said the same. Our child has been learning a foreign language outside MCPS.

My 8th grader is currently taking French 2. She has talked of switching languages next year in high school. Would she be able to start a new language if she takes IB at RM? Or would she have to continue in her current language?

Why are you asking DCUM?! call and ask the IB program coordinator directly. The information on this site is notoriously unreliable.

Is it necessary to go into the application and complete it before having the forms that must be sent to teachers for recommendations? I would like to get those forms soon, but my student won't have time to start on the essay part of the application for a little while longer. Can one start the Google Form and then come back to it at a later time?

The form says you can go back in.

The DCC choice form has been mailed.

You only need to choose the programs and submit the first google form to get access to the teacher forms, the “essay” can be done later.
That first google form basically only asks about name, program choice, and that you check a bunch of boxes of legalese.
The second google form can be saved and edited until the deadline.

FWIW, my child is also not enrolled in a world language and studies another language outside school. I see specific programs labelled IB at Rockville (like Engineering, Biomedical, Computer Science - is that a regional IB?) but not the IB program at RM. We are not planning to apply to that program but my understanding was that you could apply if you were bilingual or could test in another language.

Rockville HS also has an IB Career Related Program, which is different than the IB Diploma Program.

What is the report like?

DC got a personalized report listing the options for regionals schools and Math. Humanities, RM IB magnets.

I am wondering if any student recieved options that did NOT include magnet schools in their application.

I'd think that students who don't meet the following requirements would not have seen the magnets as an option:

-Currently or previously enrolled in Algebra 1 or higher

-Currently or previously enrolled in at least level I of a world language

Mine did not do a language in MS because she didn't like what was offered. Did not have an impact on magnet admissions.

DC is DCC. The letter that I found on ParentVue listed almost two pages of schools and there did not seem to be any sort of tailoring.
