| I do not have a high school options tab in the parent portal. |
Everyone is eligible to apply. The information meetings are for everyone, so you don’t need to receive any kind of recommendation ahead of time. |
| So there is no universal screening? |
From https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/BCDLPL55BB9C/$file/Choice%20Update%20HS%20Prog%20Options%20190530.pdf "Universal Review in Phase One During fall 2019, the district will continue the efforts underway in elementary and middle schools to identify the many highly able learners in everyschool and will conduct a universal review of Grade 8 students. Multiple measures, including student performance data; information about course enrollment; and student, parent/guardian, and teacher surveys will be analyzed to determine interests and mindset and to predict students likely to be successful in honors and advanced courses as early as Grade 9. The results will be provided to parents/guardians to assist them in making decisions about their students’ course registration at the local school and about applying to regional programs. The results of the review also will be provided to schools to assist their efforts to enroll students in appropriate courses and levels, and to help them communicate withparents/guardians about available options. All high schools will be encouraged to group students with their academic peers and to include students who show promise through mindset or other measures. " Last year, the High School application program customized letter showed up under documents and included descriptions of programs and links for applications. But they were separate links for each program. My understanding is that this year there will be one application only, and you choose all the things you are interested in. It is not clear if they already did the Universal Review and if that will appear in the High School Application information. We will just have to wait until people with 8th graders get the letter and share here what it includes. |
| My DC 's report is out. |
What is the report like? |
DC got a personalized report listing the options for regionals schools and Math. Humanities, RM IB magnets. I am wondering if any student recieved options that did NOT include magnet schools in their application. |
|
This application process is not an improvement. You can’t access the application materials until after your child applies. Your child can’t add schools later. This is much more cumbersome than the previous system.
After you apply, you get an email with supplementary materials that need to be submitted. Does anyone k is what those are? And when they are due? Is there an essay? Teacher recs? |
| Has anyone received the choice letter?l for DCC students? |
We felt it was a very simple process. Not sure about previous years high school application forms..but this one was a simple Google form that took DC literally under 10 mins to fill (select schools) and submit. Within a minute, we got another email which is another simple form that ask all teacher info for recs. Awards etc. We need to really appreciate MCPS for streamlining. The only caveat is that in awards section, there is only 2 awards that could be filled..nothing more. Same with EC activities..only 2 spots. |
| No essays this year?? |
The link for the application programs DC selected had one essay question. However, there is no mention of a test even though a test on December 7 was mentioned at the open houses DC attended. |
They said that instructions would be mailed to DCC students' homes in mid-October. You'll have until Nov. 1st to submit your choices online. |
|
Could someone please post the essay questions? My son is not sure about which programs he is going to apply for. I hate to be trapped in the form without making an informed decision as the open houses are ongoing through this month! You can't back out of your choices!
What are the essays for Blair SMAC, Wheaton Engineering, Regional IB, County-wide IB? These are the ones he is considering but not certain. He doesn't want to write an essay if he doesn't need to. Thanks! |
DC marked interest in CAP and Regional and County IB and the application link has only one essay: Describe yourself and what you are passionate about as you study, work and interact with others. |
