My child is not enrolled in a World Languages class and still is eligible for admissions to the regional IB and the countywide IB. I actually spoke with the head of the IB program at the DCC info night and she said that being enrolled in at least level 1 of a foreign language is not a requirement this year (not sure if it was in the past or if that was misinformation). My child does has studied a foreign language outside of school (one that is not offered in MCPS) and she said that was definitely good enough. She said that she has heard from other parents that speak a foreign language at home or kids who study other foreign languages outside of school and they are not making it a requirement anymore (at least in part) for that reason. The new regional IB program requirements say:

Enrolled in at least level I of Spanish, French, or Chinese or are bilingual in one of those languages

Yes, but I believe it is a mistake. If anyone wants to find out for sure, contact the head of RM IB and inquire. She told me that it's not a requirement. I am going to double check with her myself so my child can apply to the IB programs.[/quote]

We called the person in charge of RM IB back in June and she said the same. Our child has been learning a foreign language outside MCPS.[/quote]
