I hate Chelsea, but this comment makes me wish Pulisic becomes the new Hazard and leads them to a Premier League win next year... |
If the next Messi or Neymar is American, he won't be playing in MLS. And the structure of MLS creates a disincentive for individual clubs to develop a player like that and sell him to Europe, because they won't get to keep the money. Because MLS isn't a real league, it's a cartel. |
One in a country of 335 million. And he's no Messi, not even close, yet was bred for the sport and shipped to Europe to train when young. Think about that for a minute. It may support the original post. |
Was Messi mostly developed locally in Argentina or in Europe? |
The population # is irrelevant. |
That’s not what’s being argued in these threads. People are making the claim that we should be stronger than less populous countries. I agree with you, population is irrelevant. Culture is supreme. That’s why we suck (relative term) at soccer. Like India and China. |
It's not the job of MLS to foster American talent...it's to make money as a league. Don't confuse MLS with USSF. And American talent doesn't have to play in the MLS, which is why most of the best American talent is heading to Europe. |
I agree, but if MLS doesn't scout and develop neither does USSF or then there'll never be a US MessiNeymar... unless/until some rich international clubs had too much money to spend set up shop here. |
Does Iceland have a superior soccer culture that fueled the rapid growth and then success in a decade+ period? I'm not sure that's the case. |
Yes. They decided to become good at soccer, and the government supported the effort. Read: https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/06/01/iceland-world-cup-soccer-nation-story-culture-heimir-hallgrimsson Imagine if the US put this kind of effort in... |
Ah yes, government intervention is EXACTLY what we need. This must be the board liberal. Tell me, what was Iceland's #1 sport prior to soccer? Vodka shot swilling? |
And what's your take? US Soccer sucks, but it's better to whine about it than try to fix it? I wonder how much money it would take a year to make every DA absolutely free? If the government were to offer that money, you'd say 'no thanks'? |
Yes. I would not “take” the money. The federal and state/local government do not exist to pay for children’s soccer. Bridges and roads are crumbling, kids take classes in trailers, people are starving and you want these entities funding youth soccer??? What insanity this thread has become. |
The cost of one or two f22’s. |
I was excited for Pulisic to be coached by Sarri, but Frank Lampard? Meh. |
