Why would you pay full freight to send your kid to Middlebury?

Anonymous
If my kid were interested in a small, liberal arts college, it would absolutely be worth the money. They LOVE that part of the world and have many friends on staff and faculty there, but alas, too small and not the right areas of focus.

I know someone who transferred out because she felt the kids were from SUCH privileged backgrounds, that it was not at all representative. Just not her scene to be surrounded by prep school kids.

Another child we know was devastated to not be admitted, because of the strength of their language programs.

Why would you send your child to a preppy, white SLAC near the Canadian border?

23% of students come from families in the top 1%. Meanwhile, the median income for alumni at age 34 is a paltry $62K. How much value are you getting out of that $55K/year tuition? Obviously they are known for teaching and language programs, but does the tuition, isolation and limited career earnings potential justify the exorbitant cost?

That's the college where student mobs harassed a lady speaker a couple years ago?

Thanks but no thanks.

I love when stupid googles stuff then reports back here. He’s so dumb it’s fun! Write something dumb again, in that terrible writing of yours. I love it.

Hopefully not all Middlebury alumni are as dumb as you are.

Wooster and Denison are just as good as any NESCAC school. But please, keep overpaying for prestige. It'll be our little secret.

I wouldn't pay "full freight," but Middlebury gives financial aid to about half the students and the average grant is around $48,000. So if you get the FA, it might well be worth it.

K-12 education is laying your life's foundation, it is substantially more important than college (especially if you're splitting hairs of SLAC vs top public U). Kids are pretty baked in the cake by college, if we're being honest with ourselves.

+1

I do agree with you.

But, if we’re talking the DC area? Northern Va and Montgomery public’s are fantastic. The private schools are around here sell prestige, not a “better” education. We’re not in the boonies.

Huh. I sent one kid to MoCo W school and one to a private HS (not a "Big 3" but a well-regarded one) and the difference was night and day.

Agree. Not a fan of full pay for this college, but I too had one in top 5 private and another in a W public. The private school actually taught the kids. Better thinkers, writers, speakers, and creators. Discussion based courses with 10-15 kids. The public was all about pushing weighted AP courses for high GPA. A lot of memorization in classes of 30+ kids.

I'm an alum of another NESCAC school where I got a great education and was well-prepared for success at a tippy-top law school. I'm grateful to my parents for the gift of sending me to that tiny school in the mountains. One of my kids is going to my alma mater and the other two, who are STEM majors, chose a research university located in a suburban area near a major city. All 3 quite happy, so I know that Midd and comparable SLACs aren't the right fit for everyone.

For those who can't fathom why someone would want to go to college in a small town, consider the wisdom of the great Sly Stone -- different strokes, baby. When I visited Midd, I was especially impressed by the students' creativity in entertaining themselves -- quidditch matches, supper clubs, storytelling slams . . . again, maybe not your thing, but others can differ. And there's a lifetime after your bright college years to go to bars, restaurants and retail establishments, no?

As for paying full freight at any school, if you're in the fortunate position of being able to afford to do so, why not?

Aw, dummy’s losing steam. Think of your Middlebury hate! Don’t give up!

This entire thread is embarrassing for Middlebury. It seems like there are 10 year olds on here

Seems like there is just one disaffected parent (or child) who is fixated on how sour those grapes must have been.

Um, no. You don't pay full pay for a college like that. How is this even a question.

Because not everyone is so concerned with ROI, but rather the quality of education the kid receives. Some get this, some don't.

You mean privileged white people?

What’s wrong with being near the Canadian border? You say it like it’s some slum...

Yeah I’m a privileged white person. My kids will inherit millions. I don’t care what kind of job they get as life big as they get one and find it fulfilling and meaningful.

Im not sorry we have a larger cushion than you.

Middlebury is blameless in all of this. It's the nasty posters that are the embarrassment.

Nope. It was the actual students that became a national and international embarrassment.

I believe the speaker in question still suffers from concussion. Let's hope she gets better.
