Why would you pay full freight to send your kid to Middlebury?

Let's assume your combined income is $300K and you don't qualify for much aid, if any.

Why would you send your child to a preppy, white SLAC near the Canadian border?

23% of students come from families in the top 1%. Meanwhile, the median income for alumni at age 34 is a paltry $62K. How much value are you getting out of that $55K/year tuition? Obviously they are known for teaching and language programs, but does the tuition, isolation and limited career earnings potential justify the exorbitant cost?

Some people find value in it. If you don’t, you are free to send your child elsewhere.

It’s an incredibly good school. You do you.

Lots of Middlebury people at my fed govt analytic job. They make $100K by early 30s and can access a $30K signing bonus if their language skills are good enough. Maybe that’s not a lot of money for you, but I think it’s pretty good.

Middlebury is a great school. I wouldn't send a kid who was STEM focused or one who really wants a big university environment or urban setting. Otherwise, I'm prepared to pay whatever I can afford for whatever school offers the best academic fit and future opportunities for my kids.

Middlebury is an excellent look Bernal arts college in a beautiful location. You would be surprised at how much life there is up near the Canadian border. Your kid will get a first-rate education in any major they offer. That average wage is actually pretty high.

Whether your family can c9mfortably afford this and chooses to is another matter. Your kid probably has some good options that cost less. But if full freight is worth it to you anywhere, this is a school to take seriously.

Excellent school......invest in your kid, you won’t regret it. And don’t think narrowly about future income, there are a myriad of benefits of a Midd education.

How many other children in the family that will need college educations. Can you afford to send them all?

To each their own. People spend Middlebury tuition for high school, then go into state university.

I would not but if someone else want to ... that is their business. I would only pay for private if it were an Ivy or Standford/MIT.

Ha it is my DD's top choice. She has visited twice. I will have another at an ivy full pay same time and a third in high school. Similar HHI as OP. Saved some but yes it will be tough.

Midd alums do well in law school placement which is what DD wants to do. Wants the attention of a smaller school coming from a small private in the DC area.

It is a top 5 SLAC which I think is worth the brand name. I don't know if she gets in. ACT higher than their average but GPA lower.

Because not everyone has your values, OP. You do you.

Nah. Lacks bang for the buck. Classic case of high price combined with insufficient prestige.

+1 The question is--if not Middlebury, what are your kids other options?

Your salary stat is wrong, OP. Median early career salary is $61,000. Median salary with 10+ years experience is $121,800.

Hope your kid gets off the waitlist.
