We stayed at the Paradisus Esmerelda two summers ago in Playa.
It was wonderful. Would recommend the family concierge uplift. They have some fun surprises for the kids and they help with reservations and such.

Is the beach swimable?

We love vacationing in Cancun/Riviera Maya. For families, consider the Grand Moon Palace, which is part of the Moon Palace. Water park, tons of pools, kids club, mini golf, bowling alley, etc. We were there in June 2018 and had a great time. Moon Palace is nearby with large pools etc. Like many beaches now in this area, seaweed is a major issue. The resort does a fine job of hauling it all away, but it does impact the beauty of the ocean. Beaches are better in Cancun--check out Beach Palace, also part of the resort family I mentioned above. We prefer the pool, so Riviera Maya remains a good option for us.

For any adults-only readers of this thread, you MUST check out Le Blanc and Excellence Riviera Cancun. Amazing.

Rosewood is not AI, is it?

OP why Cancun? I just can’t bring myself to go there.

you weren't invited so why are you questioning?

if the beaches in Cancun are better, is there any advantage to Riviera Maya?

We are just back from Barcelo- it's a beautiful resort with a great water park. But there was a TON of seaweed. I'd be curious to know if others in Cancun had this issue over spring break or if there is more seaweed south of Playa del Carmen. It was a way bigger problem than I would have imagined- made the swimming very unpleasant. We mostly stuck to great excursions and the beautiful pools

We were just at a family resort in the Cancun hotel zone for spring break. Yes there was some seaweed , but they would groom the beach most mornings to get rid of it. It was a little bothersome but not too bad. Outside of the hotel zone I am not sure.

We have two small children 10 and 5, so I enjoyed having everything nearby at the resort. Before we had kids, we stayed in a hotel in Playa del Carmen and enjoyed that.

This was my post--The advantage of Riviera Maya, for us, is the size of the pools. The resort properties are considerably larger and the pools seem to overcompensate for the limitations of the beach. The water isn't as blue and clear as in Cancun, it's a marked difference. We prefer the pool anyway, and find the resorts with multiple pools to be a great choice for us. That said, we also love Cancun. Think more of a "hotel strip" along the beach (same as any beachfront). Space is at a premium, so there are usually only 1-2 moderately sized pools. I think it really comes down to your preference. If playing in the surf is important to you, or gazing upon a gorgeous ocean, Cancun may be an better option. Cancun is about 25-30 minutes from the airport; the resorts we have stayed in Riviera are about 15. Also, we only stay in all-inclusive. The hotels I mentioned above are very nice properties--multiple restaurants; great spas, top shelf liquors, free in-room mini-bar. The list is endless. I need to book a trip!

Is that the eco friendly one? Come back with a review please!

It is and I will. I joined the closed FB page and have found super helpful tips there.

How was your trip, PP? We’d love a review!
