This was my post--The advantage of Riviera Maya, for us, is the size of the pools.  The resort properties are considerably larger and the pools seem to overcompensate for the limitations of the beach.  The water isn't as blue and clear as in Cancun, it's a marked difference.  We prefer the pool anyway, and find the resorts with multiple pools to be a great choice for us.  That said, we also love Cancun.  Think more of a "hotel strip" along the beach (same as any beachfront).  Space is at a premium, so there are usually only 1-2 moderately sized pools.  I think it really comes down to your preference.  If playing in the surf is important to you, or gazing upon a gorgeous ocean, Cancun may be an better option.  Cancun is about 25-30 minutes from the airport; the resorts we have stayed in Riviera are about 15.  Also, we only stay in all-inclusive.  The hotels I mentioned above are very nice properties--multiple restaurants; great spas, top shelf liquors, free in-room mini-bar.  The list is endless.  I need to book a trip!  [/quote]
