Never moving to Loudoun

Sadly, the teacher was likely required (as part of the interdisciplinary requirement) to do something involving Black History Month. This was a poor choice. And, likely the result of a brainstorming session.

I'm sitting here trying to think of a good physical activity involving Black History Month. Dancing like Michael Jackson, maybe? Somehow, I don't think that would work, either. Rapping? Hip Hop?

Frankly, this is a ridiculous requirement. But, I'm betting the teacher had to come up with something.

When are we going to do Hispanic History Month? For heavens' sake, don't even consider the Mexican Hat Dance........sombreros are racist now.

Yes, let's just ignore Black history in America and the lingering effects of it in the 21st century.

If Hispanic folks are ever enslaved in this country, lynched, denied citizenship, right to vote, etc... then sure, we should have a Hispanic history month.

I suppose history classes should stop teaching about Japanese American interment, too. It's been so long and has no real bearing on our lives now. /s

Exactly. Did you see this part: "students during the Madison's Trust "game" were not designated as "slaves" or "slave owners." "

They probably thought that the "kinesthetic learners" would be helped by this activity. If you all don't like it, find a way to get people with better critical thinking skills teaching in schools.

The state is run by a kkk hood wearer for Pete's sake. This is nothing.

Do you mean teaching black history alongside American History all year? That would be a great idea since it's all American History.

Bingo!

I have never understood why they did not make January Black History Month instead of February--combine it with MLK day. Now, we are really getting two months of Black History.

Before we started honoring Black History Month, the focus in February was on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. And, yes, we focused on Lincoln and his role in freeing the slaves. That is American History.

Now, George and Abe are hardly discussed in elementary schools.

Because those of us who live in Fairfax and Arlington saw this and aren’t the least bit surprised. Because Loudoun.

Fairfax isn't so perfect either. https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_1358044

Arlington also has it's own issues--for example, the Arlington Forest debacle where the school board let white parents dictate school boundaries to make Wakefield even more racially segregated.

What a ridiculous thread, OP. ONE teacher makes a mistake and you're writing off a whole school system? We're in FCPS but have strongly considered moving to LCPS to get away from AAP. This one incident wouldn't make us think twice about moving.

That's b/c you are a REASONABLE person with the ability to distinguish between data and anecdotes. Some people are not so able.

The number of people saying the racism is fine because he “meant well” is scary. Glad my kids aren’t in LCPS.

White kids of average intelligence would be right at home in LCPS. You should definately move.

OMG. I’m in FCPS and find the “AA parents should sit down and shut up” attitude of the Loudoun parents appalling. The bigots next door. Turns out Prince William is our good neighbor. Who knew?

As an LCPS teacher I just want to apologize and say the vast majority of us are super horrified at all the stories that have come out this year about LCPS employees, including this one. Hard for me to see how this idea wasn't stopped by someone with good sense. Some people are just clueless. Most of us are not like this and overall your kids are still in good hands at LCPS schools.

It was a good attempt to teach history. There will always be someone offended about racism and it's always not the minority but liberal whites

Yes, it’s embarrassing and inexcusable. But it’s also embarrassing to see the Arlington and Fairfax posters jumping on this thread to congratulate themselves on their county’s comparative wokeness. I’m sure you chose your lily-white Arlington school district because of its racial equality.

And economic equality. North Arlington is one of the least diverse areas in the entire DMV area. Must less so than Loudoun racially and economically.
