Shepherd ES to New North Middle School?

yes, to attend Deal.

Right, Deal bus is definitely a thing. Elementary busing much less so. I think they bus military kids to Stoddert still, right?

I can't imagine a new chancellor would take that fight during his first year or two, but assuming there is a boundary review in 2023 ... it will be a battle.

This is the lead argument from our intrepid commissioner.

Mobilization is certainly underway. Towards what ends is up for interpretation...

More relevantly, the Ward 3 Ed Net is not viewed as a friendly entity here. At all.

What game are you playing posting this everywhere? It funny you keep posting about it, if I remember correctly at least one of your kids is going to wilson using the Shepherd feeder system. So now you think it is ok to kick out SES out of deal/wilson or you just don't care what happens since you kids are already going to deal/wilson? Stop being an hypocrite!

It seems like you have a personal issue. I write a blog about the happenings at our local ANC meetings. I couldn't very well ignore the topic, introduced by our ANC commissioner, that took up a large chunk of time at the most recent meeting.

And I really didn't offer any opinion about whether Shepherd should stay in the Deal feeder or not, other than suggesting that the likelihood of a change is pretty remote.

We can get together to talk about this anytime.

Mr. Alexander, thank you for all you don in the neighborhood. Keep it up!

NP here, what has Mr. Alexander done for the neighborhood? I really just curious.

Hi SP resident here. He attends all these meetings and reports back on his blog, which helps me know what is going on. I can't make most of the meetings due to work and kids' sports schedules. He also ran a great robotics club in the fall for SES/neighborhood kids. I am not sure what your problem is with his post but I find your aggressive demeanor unwarranted. Find a new hobby, please.

NP means New Poster. I am not the past poster and really just wanted to know who Mr. Alexander is since I am new to the neighborhood. I made sure to disclaim that in my post but you ignored it, I guess you are the aggressive one in this case. But thanks anyway for the info!

OK - I'm PP who wanted to have Ward 1/4 kids actually go to neighborhood schools like MacFarland or Roosevelt. Now if somebody told me that it was a given that Lafayette's feeder school was New North (not MacFarland, right?) I'd take that as a great thing. However, I'm not able to think how we would do that or what would be the strong planning justification, beyond just some kind of "let's just more equitably redistribute stuff."

Oh the writing style were similar, which is why I made that assumption. Apologies if you are a new poster.

The complaint is Deal and Wilson are oversubscribed, correct? Removing SES from the feeder removes roughly 40 students at most. How does that relieve any overcrowding? If you moved Lafayette with SES to New North, it would dramatically reduce Deal. Shepherd is a small school.

Are we going based on proximity to Deal or other schools or just based on Ward boundaries?

Nobody is suggesting to bus elementary.

DOD runs buses from JBAB to DCPS schools where base kids are clustered. They aren't WMATA or DCPS run buses.

We coming up with ideas to fix overcrowding at Deal and Wilson. I don't think there is a defined reason to kick any school out.

We have friends at Lafayette that continuously (and mistakenly) mention we are OOB in SP for Deal. I think WotP citizens seem to forget that SP has been going to Deal since Paul MS closed and the surrounding ES were converted to EC.

But yes, it is going to get ugly. Ward 3 and Lafayette parents will not be happy until Shepherd and Bancroft are out. It is a West vs East of the Park battle. I just can't see kids who read at a college level going to Coolidge where 73% can't read at grade level.

Agree 100%, we all know it is about not wanting black kids in their school!

Stop being racially divisive. That is total bullshit.

The are parents at Lafayette who have said this to me. The equate black with behavioral problems and low test scores. You may not think that but they do. If you have spent anytime on the AU Park listserv, you are aware how white people view black teenagers walking through the neighborhood.

I have to say this is very true. I've heard many snide comments at my kid's little league games.

Wow. I'm surprised people would speak openly in public settings when EOTP families could be present. What sorts of comments have you heard?

calexander wrote:Color me doubtful, especially with a certain baby living in-bounds. But I'm here to report the story.

This discussion is making the rounds in the neighborhood and came up at last night's ANC 4A meeting.

Shepherd parents were there laying down markers.

Check out the story at the bottom of my blog post about the meeting.

Cheers!

I live in 4A - 4A03 to be exact. While I am zoned for Brightwood, I am cautiously hoping that New North will be on par with Wilson in s decade or so.

It would be great if the city would stop changing school boundaries when there are other options. People buy homes at high prices to be IB for Deal and Wilson, and real estate is long term. We spent a lot of money (to us) to buy in boundary for Shepherd, Deal, and Wilson after the recent boundary change a few years ago. We specifically bought for Deal and Wilson. Yes, I understand that boundaries can change, but it's not reasonable to have an area IB for the good schools only for short periods. It's not stable.

I'd rather see feeder rights end for OOB students at schools that feed to Deal and Wilson, or at least changed to a preference in the lottery as opposed to a guarantee. These parents didn't ~$1M for the rights to these schools.

Shepherd is starting to get more in boundary kids, which is great for the school and the neighborhood community. Having a path for stronger schools all the way through 12th grade is part of that. Remove Shepherd from the Deal and Wilson feeder, and the desirability of Shepherd would decrease. People need a feeder pattern. That's why so many kids in all over the rest of the city go to charters schools - it's so they have a path after elementary.

It's also distressing to hear that some Ward 3 parents are plotting to kick us out. I just received a notification from Deal for the gala and asking us to attend and/or donate. Now I feel like I don't want to give anything to benefit these families who don't want my kids there. My oldest is likely going there anyway, but we have younger kids who might not make a potential future cut off.

I do believe there are racial factors at play here with the Ward 3 parents. There's such an obvious and more fair solution to end feeder rights for OOB students attending feeder schools. Why are they fixating on the 2 IB schools that just happen to have a high percentage of brown kids?

All districts move boundaries as demographic patterns change -- one neighborhood gets older and has fewer kids and there are baby booms in others.

DCPS did nto review boundaries for a long time, but best practice is to review them every 10 years ago, and even address particularly overcrowded schools that pop up more quickly. Just hop over to the MoCo schools board on DCUM. There's always a debate about boundaries shifting.

And as the lsat review reiterated, DCPS has the right to change boundaries at any time. Living in a neighborhood (owning or renting) does not give you a permanent right to the IB school/feeder pattern when you purchased.

No doubt. But that's not what the post says, is it?
