Shepherd ES to New North Middle School?

Color me doubtful, especially with a certain baby living in-bounds. But I'm here to report the story.

This discussion is making the rounds in the neighborhood and came up at last night's ANC 4A meeting.

Shepherd parents were there laying down markers.

Check out the story at the bottom of my blog post about the meeting.

Cheers!

It sounded to me like this was to mobilize people to be ready for the next boundary review -- because they assume/believe WOTP parents will push for some school to be cut from the Deal feeder pattern.

I can't imagine a new chancellor would take that fight during his first year or two, but assuming there is a boundary review in 2023 ... it will be a battle.

OP you are right. As long as the mayor has a kid in that feeder system, she is going to deal or Wilson. Maybe in 20 years there will be another review and the federal will change. It’s alsp smacks of segregation.

No, she’s not. By the time she is school age, Bowser will not be mayor and she will go private.

This is one of several study areas to alleviate Deal/Wilson overcrowding. More information of the ongoing study is here:

I think the likelihood of this happening is further down the list of actual implemented possibilities than ending OOB feeder rights, which would also significantly alleviate crowding. This has been discussed ad naseum in other threads (notably this one: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/772414.page).

Long story short is that this change would bring with it the optics of taking Bancroft (majority brown) and Shepherd (majority black) out of Deal feeders will result in a nearly all-white feeder population. You do the math on how that will play out in DC politics.

This is the lead argument from our intrepid commissioner.

Mobilization is certainly underway. Towards what ends is up for interpretation...

More relevantly, the Ward 3 Ed Net is not viewed as a friendly entity here. At all.

I live in SP and saw the listserv message, with no context provided. Why did the commissioner bring that up now? Is he privy to some intel the rest of us aren’t, or what?

Has anything actually happened with this since this was posted in Jan 2018?

It's worth noting how the last (contentious) feeder pattern change was implemented, including grandfathering - details are here: https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/Boundary%20and%20Feeder%20Pattern%20Changes%20FAQ.pdf

This was announced in March 2015 and took effect in SY15-16. It allowed for students to continue to their previous feeder for 15-16, 16-17, and 17-18 if they were enrolled. So if you were in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade that year - you were good. And they allowed for siblings of those who wound up in that feeder to continue to attend.

So, worst case - if this change were to be implemented in 2023 boundary review, AND they followed prior precedent, it would be implemented in SY23-24. So that means if you have a kid at Shepherd, your oldest would need to be in 5th grade by the SY25-26 school year...meaning, they'd have to be in PK3 this school year. That's a lot of "ifs," but should at least make current families feel a little bit better.

The mayor's baby will be Pk3 eligible in 2021. Bowser will still be mayor in 2021; her daughter may well go to private school as Bowser and her family Catholic and attended Catholic schools.

We live in SP. I think Stacey mentioned the redistricting because folks heard about the Ward 3 Parents group are working to kick people out. I think it if Lafayette was included in the redistricting since they are a Ward 4 school; it would be an easier pill to swallow. We have friends at Lafayette that continuously (and mistakenly) mention we are OOB in SP for Deal. I think WotP citizens seem to forget that SP has been going to Deal since Paul MS closed and the surrounding ES were converted to EC.

But yes, it is going to get ugly. Ward 3 and Lafayette parents will not be happy until Shepherd and Bancroft are out. It is a West vs East of the Park battle. I just can't see kids who read at a college level going to Coolidge where 73% can't read at grade level.

What game are you playing posting this everywhere? It funny you keep posting about it, if I remember correctly at least one of your kids is going to wilson using the Shepherd feeder system. So now you think it is ok to kick out SES out of deal/wilson or you just don't care what happens since you kids are already going to deal/wilson? Stop being an hypocrite!

OP, are you implying the Mayor will put the interests of her family over the interest of the city? Or are you referring to your own kids benefitting from the current feeder pattern?

"Intrepid commissioner". Please. Because he supported the community having a say in traffic patterns related to a potential Harris Teeter location in SP. Isn't your wife a real estate agent?Anything else to disclose?
