Spring Tryouts - ECNL/DA

No, you did not receive one. Coaches will always lock up their top players early and they will try and lock up outside players as soon as possible. When a coach tells an outside player "we'd love to have her on the team, register for tryouts", that is an offer. What do you think it means? A formal offer can't be made until the player is actually registered. When they do, the coach will tell the player and the parent to keep the offer to themselves until after tryouts.

When a coach tells a kid ON the team, "hey, don't worry about tryouts kid, I've seen you all year", that is also the offer. Once the player registers then the same scenario as above happens.

Most coaches know far more players outside of the club than you realize. They know who has reached out to them, they see who has registered. There are very few unknowns to the coaches going into a tryout. They know going in who they want. What they never know is who will click accept or not. And that is when they move down the list.

And for DA/ECNL teams the rolling nature of offers is prevalent because they need to lock up the top talent. Lower teams always need to wait for the top teams to fill out their rosters.

Pre offers also take form in reaching out to players in any number of ways. From checking in, to directly letting them know to to come to tryouts or practices or outright telling them that they would love to have them aboard. Tryouts are never a blind process. Coaches always leave open room for that kid who they have never seen before, that's why they do have tryouts.

Ok, you're not totally ignorant, you're just annoying. An offer (pre or not) is a written commitment in my book and the clubs I have seen here do not do this. Sure, players get lots of verbal cues, and that's what I mean about the top half of the team not needing to worry. They've all heard similar things. Players in the bottom half have heard a range of less positive feedback so they know they're in a competition.

I would be completely shocked if there is an ECNL or DA club out there that does not extend written offers to top players prior to tryouts. It's their only way of ensuring that their top kids won't jump to another club.

Oh there is definitely a local DA program club that didn’t extend early written offers. But that same DA won’t be around beyond this spring. Wonder when they’ll share that information with players and parents.

And here we go. It would be nice if, instead of starting a "club bashing" post in a thread, the PP just posted to the Spirit VA DA thread that is still floating around. Then people interested in discussing whether Spirit VA is disbanding after this Spring could just read that thread, which, by the way, has already covered this topic.

I appreciate people can post in whatever thread they want, but it just sometimes gets old when threads are hijacked by the back-and-forth as people attack/defend a particular club.

Apologies, it was in the WS MD DA thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/15/756952.page

If your child happens to get one of these offers, whether from their own club or an outside club, then how long do they have to determine whether to accept it? I'd guess that one would have as much time as they'd like, given it is a pre-offer to a player who is highly desired by the club. But I could also see the coaches and club putting a fair amount of pressure on the child to accept quickly, given the desire to lock-down certain players early.

I appreciate this would be a nice problem to have for one's kid, but I am just curious of how it should be handled if, for example, your child was looking at a couple of clubs and received an early offer from one club before any of the other clubs.

In my daughter's case, there was a deadline on the emailed offer, however, we told the coach that we were not prepared to accept in that time frame and we understood that the club could pull her offer. He told us that the deadline did not matter to him and she had the spot regardless. She ended up moving clubs before the tryout date and we made sure to let him know as soon as a decision was made. I'm sure some coaches may hold players to a deadline--probably depends on how many kids have already accepted, the kid's standing on the team, how many outside kids the coach is targeting, etc.

Also--the club she was going to did ask that we decide prior to tryouts

Looks like Arlington and FCV have both posted dates for ID sessions on their website.

With VDA and BRYC also now posting ID sessions on their websites, does anyone know when Loudoun, McLean and BSC will post ID sessions? It would seem to be in their interest to do so sooner rather than later, as girls will have committed to Arlington, FCV, VDA and BRYC before those other clubs have even hosted their sessions. Or am I missing something?

I get that, if someone is switching clubs, then they would likely already have attended several practice with the other club and may already have received an offer. However, it seems that some girls' hands will be forced, if one club has a much earlier ID session than another. If that is the case, then it would seem to be in the best interest of a club to have their ID sessions in Jan and Feb., as opposed to waiting until April or May, for example.

When are ECNL clubs permitted to begin ID sessions? Isn’t the date later in the spring season?

ID sessions are permitted, but current ECNL players can't attend another ECNL club's session until after May 1.

What about current U12s?

They can go to ID sessions since they aren’t ECNL players yet. The only situation I would think would be an issue is if the U12 player is rostered to a current U13 ECNL team because she is playing up, or has an ECNL card to play up occasionally. A U12 player in an ECNL club is free to go to sessions now if they only have a US Club or VYSA card.
