That's a total straw man argument -- no one said those things were less important. There are plenty of schools that can fill their classes with very well qualified applicants from the standpoint of grades and test scores many times over. Clearly being an URM is a "hook." The question is, all other things being equal, is being an Eagle Scout an advantage over other similarly situated people. The answer is yes. Obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout takes long-term commitment that is not required for the vast majority of extracurricular activities. It shows the ability to stick with something and follow through. |
| HYPS alum here. I don't know how it factors into admissions, but I know I am still always impressed by people who made Eagle Scout or Gold Star. If I found that out about someone who was a recent grad who was applying for a job with me, I would consider that as a "pro" to hiring them. |
We're talking about college admissions, not applying for jobs. Maybe a different thread?
|
It may be viewed favorably, but all things are never equal. Selective schools don't really care. Maybe Penn State, but that's not hard to get into anyway. |
Yes, & PP being an HYSP alum was irrelevant to his or her post (which concerned his/her role in hiring not his or her education) but we all know how DCUMers like to throw out information like that at every opportunity

My son got into William and Mary because he was an Eagle Scout. |
VMI |
NP: DS, Eagle got into UVA, three Ivies, and three top tech schools. His Eagle friends also similarly placed. |

Haha ha this is cute. |
| Yes, it will help. If not, apply to Hampton-Sydney and get a $20K scholarship. https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2017/12/28/eagle-scouts-at-this-college-get-an-automatic-5000-a-year-scholarship-and-heres-why/ |
| @Pedo State U. You get a tour of the you know what... |
| Impossible for anyone to say what git them in. Eagle scout is part of a picture. Why wouldn't a long term commitment to an activity involving lots of leadership help? |
LOL. My DS got into W&M and wasn't an Eagle Scout.! As for Penn State, it is a NUMBERS game. A GPA and SAT matrix. |
You didn’t learn critical thinking at NVCC Loudoun |
...in a discriminatory organization that banned gay people. Impressive. |
