I don’t get this. |
Exactly. People SEVERELY overestimate the percent of graduates who actually go to any of these schools. |
CA. And whether you have heard of it or not, it is one of the best (& most selective) schools in the country. |
Then you don’t “get” what prestigious means. |
They are prestigious because: - They have low acceptance rates and attract a high caliber of students (entering stats comparable to the Ivies and other top private universities). - They have high retention rates, good graduation rates, and hefty financial resources for their size (with four of the top ten richest colleges/universities per capita in the USA being these LACs) - They have a disproportionate representation of graduates across top fields and schools. For example, in Yale Law School (considered #1), 11 students from Amherst, a school with fewer than 1800 students, attend, compared to 6 at UVA, a school with 16,000. 6 students come from Pomona, with 1600 students, compared to 2 at UCLA with 31000 and 7 at USC with 20,000. Their graduates win fellowships at high rates as well relative to size. - Amherst and Williams are known for being target schools in the finance industry alongside the Ivies; they and other LACs mentioned tend to be recruited by top companies like McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, and the like - They attract privileged students from well-off and well-connected backgrounds, being especially well-regarded in the private school circle; their alumni tend to be well-connected and established, spreading the word of their alma mater among elite circles (I believe Forbes ranked Amherst in the top 10 among all colleges for its "American Leaders" ranking). |

THE JUST-MISSED – Still highly brag-worthy schools, but just a rung below. If your kid attends one of these schools, you can counter by talking about how well-rounded they are, and that quality of life was most important in their college search.
Duke Brown Dartmouth Amherst/Williams Pomona JUST-MISSED BRAINIACS – Similar to the Brainiacs above, intellectuals might consider these schools as good as/better than the Just-Missed Schools. But among the general population, they don’t have quite the same cachet. Johns Hopkins Cal-Berkeley Swarthmore Very funny joke! |
If you “don’t get it” then they’re obviously not for you. But that says more about you than it does about Amherst. |
Just for fun I looked at the numbers for MCPS HS (BCC, Whitman, WJ, Churchill, Blair, Richard Montgomery, Wooton) and how many from last years graduating class attend each school by category. Total of 3,877 seniors. Gold Standard - 100 (3%) Brainiacs - 78 (2%) Just Missed - 80 (2%) Just Missed Braniacs - 75 (2%) Nothing to be Ashamed of - 297 (8%) Where is That Again - 71 (2%) Safety Schools - 109 (3%) Total - 810 (21%) |
You’re clearly not part of the DC elite. |

That link is APPLIED, not attend. You don’t know how this works. |
It shows ACCEPTED in the chart. You also need to read more carefully. Still not the same as attending, but also more specific than applied. |
+1 Hahahah! For all of those not in anything remotely close to "inside the beltway" prestigious circles, this is a great snapshot. It certainly mirrors a lot of DCUM arguments too. |
Yes, that’s what I meant to say. You said these numbers show how many graduating seniors from each school attend these colleges, which is not remotely what this list tells you. |
