NP. And people who come to a dead stop in the merge lane are also very dangerous because they have just forced every car behind them to also come to a dead stop. I have never, ever, in all my years of driving around the US in multiple metropolitan areas had to come to a stop in a merge lane except when the car in front of me forced me to do so. I have never come to the end of a merge lane and not had space to merge. You use the lane to approach the speed of the other drivers, you quickly calculate if you need to speed up a little more or less depending on the cars around you, and you merge. This is very manageable at speeds of 40-60. It is very, very dangerous starting at 0. It makes me incredibly angry when people endanger my life by not possessing a basic driving skill. I can be angry while I drive and not endanger anyone. Your platitudes are ridiculous. |
THIS!! |
I hope that's true, for everyone's sake. |

Where is this? I gotta say, I have never once been stuck in a merge lane where the person has just completely stopped, and I've been driving for 30 years - in DC for 20 of them. |
| They're from PA. |
NP. Happens all the time on the N Gallows Road exit from Rt 50 W. There is a lane to merge into without stopping but people routinely stop. Causes a long back up on the exit ramp. |
| I have an older car which does not have good pickup, especially in the heat. I am not going to risk my life to let the person behind me go a little faster. |
Have you heard of downshifting? You can do it even if you have an automatic. |
|
GW parkway has several exits and entrances like this. (123 to go north, by the CIA, etc). I hate it both as the merger and the merged. It is really a poor lane design. Neither driver can see far enough out to know what to do all the time.
I do my best but try to avoid those lanes when I know it is coming. I’m 20+ years without an accident I’ve caused, and a very good driver. These are just lousy situations. My solution is to go a different way. |
OP, don't dcum while driving. |
|
It sucks, but what can you do? The person can be old, scared, confused, drive a car with no acceleration...so many reasons (not excuses) it is just not worth it to get upset.
No one's life is really endangered anymore than on a main road if someone suddenly stops. If everyone is paying attention and keeping a car length, should be all good. |
But...people can't just stop at will in a moving lane of traffic. It is against the law and they will cause accidents. Go start a new thread if you want to rant about road rage. This one is about people who don't obey traffic laws by stopping in a traffic lane that should be moving. You can also bitch on there about people who drive faster than 55 mph in the left lane and flash their lights at you because you never move out of the left lane.

DP, but I will never understand the people who think they get to dictate and control how people respond? You are NOT the masters of the internet, peeps.
The fact is, OP, you opened up the conversation to your emotional state by saying "don't make me hate you." SO guess what,. Responding to that is fair game, too. |
| I suck at driving; I didn’t drive for over a decade because I lived in a city with great public transit and I get really nervous on the highway, especially with merging. Like that scene in “Clueless” where they accidentally merge onto the freeway, ha. |
