DS's friend lives far away- report?

Anonymous
Has anyone found a hotline number yet? People should not MYOB, I agree if we as taxpayers see or hear something suspicious say something. There is no sense in educating children who do not live here nor their parents. It essentially means we are missing out on tax money if their parents are not living in the county. Judging by the curriculum debacle and the class sizes MCPS needs all the help it can get.

I'm a PP whose co-worker lives in a different county but sends her kids to MCPS using a grandparent address. I think it's so strange that they choose to stick with MCPS! You'd think people would be happy to get out of the MCPS craziness. Go figure.

MCPS is close to DC metro. It is much easier to get to your kid from DC than it would be from VA or other counties further out in MD.

No it isn't common. You just seem to know a lot of people who disregard the law.

Start reporting it. It costs $15-20k to educate each kid in MCPS, most schools are busting at the seams, classroom caps are at all-time highs, and teacher/student ratios are the worst of all surrounding states.

This is factually incorrect.

(The information about the teacher/student ratios may also be factually incorrect, but I don't know.)

28 in K,
30 in ES
33 in MS
35 in HS

those are pretty high caps. I called all three a few months ago when trying to decide where to go and that potentially could be your child's classroom size.

No, that's incorrect.

25 in K (18 for Focus)
27 for 1-3 (18 for 1-2 in Focus, 26 for 3 in Focus)
29 in 4-5 (28 in Focus)

Compare to caps in 1997-1998:

24 in K
28 in 1-3
30 in 4-6

PP, we are discussing caps for schools that are non-focus-----you know those in the W schools, Upcounty schools, and wealthy Takoma Park & Silver Spring areas.

Yes, the caps for those schools are listed above. They are not "at all-time highs".

You can report fraud here to pupil personnel and Attendance Services. The website allows you to find the school attendance person by the school. Telephone: 301-315-7335

Takoma Park is a Focus School, as is Piney Branch ES. East Silver Spring is a Focus School, and Rolling Terrace is Title I.

Those are all the schools that serve elementary-aged kids in Takoma Park.

Does anything actually get done about this though?

We are going into our 6th year at our ES and have seen dozens of families who live out of boundary. Nobody bats an eye! The parents are often very upfront about it.

I think it is incredibly difficult to catch when people are using family members addresses. How do you prove that Larlo does not actually live with Grandma or Aunt Betty? No way they can ever actually prove fraud.

PP, nothing ever gets done at your school possibly because your principal is turning a blind eye. I suggest clicking on one of those links to find your assigned school worker and then emailing them or calling the number. This office can only do their job if it is reported; if no one reports they think everything is dandy.

Of course, OP. That's exactly what friends do. Snitch.

I'm confused. What does "a lot of the time" mean? Does the kid stay with his father the rest of the time in bounds? Why would you report that?

It's not snitching, its the law. Friends and non-friends have to follow the rules. If your kid is out of boundary and it is found you are out of compliance, then you need to move in boundary or go to your neighborhood school.

I'd report it and then let MCPS do their job from there.
