When you're over 50 (the title of this thread) your kids are teenagers and you're not typically sitting down to a family dinner because one has high school sports practice and the other has play rehearsal until 8.

Or, if you're significantly over 50, your kids don't notice that you're skipping dinner because your kids are at college in another state.


Surely I am not the only family with teenagers still doing family dinners. I think it is even more important with teenagers. My kids open up while eating

Not OP, but the tips are good and easier said than done, especially when your genes were all cooperative until menopause. I'm taking the attitude I got away with something for a very long time, and now I have to work like everyone else who wasn't so lucky.

+1 to the above. I had a flat stomach and now I've grown a roll in the last year. Eating less doesn't seem to help but I know I've lost weight just not the fat on the belly. I know there are worse things, but any advice on getting rid of it?

We do family dinner with 13 and 16 year olds every night. It is the best time of the day! No phones allowed and sometimes our kids even laugh. It sometimes means we are eating at 8:00 because we both work and there are various things going on. I realize eating at 8:00 probably contributes to my weight gain, but the emotional closeness and the emotional wellbeing of my teens is way more important to me than how I look in a swim suit.

+1 Yep to everything this poster listed, except the first one (I've never fasted). I'm pretty trim and 60+ but have the advantage of being tall.

5'6, 120 lbs, 43yo AA. I spend 10-12 hours in the gym weekly, lots of cardio and weights for my Michelle O arms. Every morning I sit down to drink black coffee with DDs while they breakfast. Usually have only coffee until 3pm. Eat too much in the evening. Usually have beans, steamed veg, pumpkin seeds, etc for dinner. Now eating fruit and cake for dessert but will detox soon to shed 5 lbs. No alcohol or soda, no meat, only dairy a little cheese 3x/week. Zoe Saldana has the ideal figure in my book. I will do anything to get back down to 110.

I do think this is all easier if you have no kids or grown kids. If your kids are tweens or younger and you work, it’s really hard to spend 10-12 hours exercising a week plus eat a light veggie-loaded dinner.
I do try to adjust my dinner a little so it is somewhat less calorie laden than what the kids are eating but it’s hard because then I’m cooking more food plus it’s hard to resist that yummy cheese-carb combo sitting on the table. I keep hoping that as they become teens they will be more attracted to vegetables. Once they are in college I can move to the “light dinner model” and lose it all, I hope!

I think you'd feel better during the day and lose those ten pounds if you ate that supper at lunchtime--or what I do is to take a lunch to work and snack on it throughout the afternoon/evening.
