Is she too old to jump? If not, Ive seen some that have a relatively small footprint. Def agree should be in the living area so she wouldn’t be all alone.

| Someone should euthanize OP in her twilight years |
You know what, if I'm pissing in your bedroom at that time and you can't do anything to fix it, go right ahead. |
| You people or anthropomorphizing pets. Try the kitty Prozac and if that doesn’t work then it’s OK. The cat doesn’t sound happy anyway and probably isn’t having fun living with these neuroses. |
Yes, because Euthanizing a 16 year old cat is exactly the same as killing an elderly human being. |
+1. I agree. Rehoming her would be way too stressful for an old timid cat. 16 is a great long life for a cat. It's not reasonable to keep a cat that is so old she can no longer reliably use the litter box. You can euthanize her in good conscience. |
I don’t know how you made it this long. In my book you’re a saint. Send this animal to kitty heaven. Let light perpetual shine upon her. |
Op gave a timid cat with terrible litter box habits a home for 16 years. That's pretty much the BEST anyone can hope for. |

+1 to the PP who suggested kitty Prozac. May I also suggest you keep the bathroom fan on, and clean the cat box/shower more often?
I've just had to put down my kitty who has been extremely ill for the last two weeks. We've spent thousands of dollars on surgeries for him and he has continued to have devastating UT issues, the last one of which did him in. He was in our master bath on towels and prefolds and we cleaned after him once a day, and wiped the floor with water daily. The smell was no where near as dramatic as you describe. |
OP is clearly a drama queen trying to rationalize her selfish decision to kill her aging cat because it is no longer convenient for her to have it around. |
OP here. Box scooped daily or twice daily depending on when people shower. Shower cleaned at least twice daily - must be cleaned before showering in order to remove litter and wash away urine, and then it gets all the soap from showers. I have a strong sense of smell so maybe it bothers me more than most, but my husband also hates it and my kids remark on it as well. We're down to just one type of litter she seems willing to use at all so that's what we're stuck with. She's a good cat except for the fact that I just can't live with her anymore. I wish she would die in her sleep, perfectly happy, but so far she wakes up every morning ready to resume her day of lurking in our room and hiding from everything. Thank you to those PPs who have been understanding. It seems like the best path is to put her down rather than look for a new home. It will be extremely hard to do (which is why she's still with us despite many years of trouble) but I think the better option for her than what's left. |
This is very cool. I can't really tell from the picture, but is the bottom a litter tray? (NP here) |
| OP, i don't think you've mentioned whether you've tried anxiety drugs. Prozac or buspirone were game changers for my cat who was peeing outside the box. I would give that one good shot and then go for euthanasia. No one is going to adopt at 16 year old cat with a history of inappropriate urination. |
+1 The critical people here are out of their minds. Or else are advocates for the idea that basically only 10 unemployed obsessed people with no risk of death or injury in the next 20 years being the only cat owners in the world, since their standards for cat ownership are unachievable by anyone else. In that case are we just going to let the other cats die at the SPCA? Pet ownership, especially when you adopt a stray is a compromise. You are doing the best you can and while I do not condone abuse, OP has more than met any reasonable standard for being a good pet owner. Good luck OP. I'm sorry this is a hard decision and I wish you the best of luck going forward. I think you know that the time has come. You've given the cat a great life. |
this. try king street cats. |
