Sometimes the order switches. West Springfield was bumped up (for reasons I don't approve of). That doesn't mean that the current state of any high school building is due to racism, classism, or any nefarious cause. |
What were their reasons for delaying Fairfax and for bumping up West Springfield? Wasn't TJ bumped up as well? |
Falls Church HS was obviously in worst shape than TJ but it was penalized in the renovation queue because it was purportedly under-enrolled at the time, whereas TJ apparently was not treated similarly even though it has fewer students than every other HS besides Lee. You're fooling yourself if you believe TJ doesn't get special treatment while a school like Falls Church gets kicked to the end of the line. |

It sounds from this article that boundaries should be changed to more equally blend income levels. That would be great. |
Why would the county want to drive away the people who pay most of the taxes? |
| Why was West Springfield bumped up? |
| Is there any talk of putting an academy at Falls Church to boost the numbers there? |
I don't know the answer to this but I live in the area and the West Springfield parents have been upset about the condition of that school for years, so I'm wondering if they launched a petition to get the renovations moved up. |
West Springfield had things going on like walls separating from floors on the upper floors. Their need was very pressing and went beyond cosmetic or modern updates. |
The School Board member at the time cut a deal where West Springfield HS would be moved up in exchange for closing Clifton ES. |
Yes, but it's also about the income levels at your school. At many low income schools, TJ isn't on the radar. I volunteered at school, and for a reading program, we sent books home with students that were often not returned or acknowledged. Reading incentives were eventually dropped. I believe non-targeted groups were the only ones taking advantage. Homework was next. Focus is on passing the SOLs if that's even possible. Everything is about what can be done within the school day because nothing will happen on off hours. Kids get used to that and by the time middle school rolls around, they think they're doing pretty well, but there's a whole other world out there. The middle school is extremely limited regarding county paid-for after school offerings (there are no science/math clubs there either) and information about TJ is closely held and cannot be found on the website. So, if you're a kid in one of these schools, how would know there are other things out there when you're surrounded by similar people doing similar things. Even if the parents are curious, it's difficult to find out if they only go as far as the neighborhood school. |
I second this PP - I can't believe that people who have not had to work very hard to get where they are, can sit around and state that all FARMS families couldn't care less about their kids' education ?! |
This seems closer to reality. |
If every school provided the same opportunities, we wouldn't have this issue. Why should there be some schools trying unsuccessfully to field a STEM team when there are other schools turning away students? |
NP here. We are an Asian-American family. DH and I did very well in school without the help of our poor Asian immigrant parents. DH and I both hated being poor. My parents never helped me with my homework. They couldn't. |
