Sounds like another expensive initiative that is basically a bunch of fluff that pus a few people into some taxpayer funded cushy jobs.

Exactly, 16:14. That's exactly what it is.

The fact that the School Board adopted it on a 10-0 vote tells you it's meaningless. In reality, the School Board members have very different priorities and want more money spent in their own districts.

It's an initiative that the county is already doing (to some extent). Naturally the school board can and should follow along.

Come back when FCPS actually does something to pull Lee HS out of the toilet or add some SES diversity at Langley HS.

Deporting illegals would do far more for FCPS than this waste of paper.

I don’t understand what one Fairfax is trying to do.

I am 1st generation asian immigrant and my children attend Longfellow MS and Mclean HS. They wanted to go to TJ but are not "ggod" enough to attend TJ.

All of my kids attend both the chinese Sunshine academy and korean Best academy but in the end, they are just not "good" enough.

If you go to Sunshine academy classes on weeknights and weekends, you will see 5th and 6th graders, mostly asians and Indians, really excel in math and science. I've been to both places for almost 5 five years and in five years, I see exactly 1 black student (from africa) and NO hispanic students at Sunshine and Best academy. Sunshine and Best academy are tutoring places to help kids achieve and prepare them for TJ.

Stuart takes kids that live in the Culmore and Seven corners areas, and Falls Church HS takes kids from nearby route 50 and graham intersection. Lot of apartments in those areas. You get the idea.

I'm delighted that the heavily Democratic school board has decided to focus on equity. I particularly look forward to their taking steps to reduce the large class sizes in Vienna and other parts of the county, which are ridiculously large compared to those in, for example, the Mason and Mount Vernon Districts, where classes often max out at 15 or 16 kids.

What is the Mason district?

What is your point? Are you saying that because Blacks and Hispanics are not attending Sunshine Academy, they don't value education? No one I know attends Sunshine Academy - filling your weekends drilling math isn't the only way to 'value education.'

I have kids at a Mason district school. It has smaller class sizes because of the Title 1 status. Our K class a few years ago was 19 kids, 2nd grade has 22 kids. The smaller class sizes are intended to accommodate the fact that a higher percentage of the kids are ESOL or have other disadvantages and require extra attention. I haven't seen a class with 15 kids, though, would be interested in knowing what school has that happen "often"?

Parklawn, for example. But people in Vienna would love classes with 19-22 kids. If equity is our new lens, I'm sure the Board will work to reduce the class size disparities.
